WIAA: Committees for classifications, ejections and more

I spoke with WIAA executive director Mike Colbrese today, trying to catch up on a couple newsy items, and wanted to pass along a few nuggets some will find interesting.

The WIAA has formed a committee to study classification. Colbrese said everything is on the table for discussion, particularly, how frequently should reclassification occur, what students should be counted and when should counts occur. I know some athletic directors are very much in favor of moving from a two-year cycle to a four-year cycle. And some are vehemently opposed. We’ll see what transpires.

Another committee was formed in response to a failed Rep Assembly amendment — No. 10-1 and 10-2 — regarding appeal processes for ejections. Colbrese said the committee will study if its possible for any amendment regarding this subject could gain support.

The third committee will study how the WIAA can assist teams hit with sanctions, particularly how leagues can resolve these issues. Of course, to make it fair, leagues throughout the state would have to operate with the same rules. Is that possible?

This loosely relates to the state legislature’s recent passing of Senate Bill 6383. Colbrese said the Executive Board had started to work on this before the bill passed.
