Bonney Lake High wasn’t without a football coach for long.
One month after former coach Chad Barrett resigned, the Panthers pulled their new head coach from the dominant team in its league – perennial state contender Lakes High – when it announced the hiring of Jason Silbaugh, defensive coordinator at Lakes since 2004, on Friday.
Silbaugh is eager to get started at Bonney Lake.
“It’s a program in a community I think is supportive and it’s successful,” he said. “It feels right.”
Silbaugh, 38, can be confirmed as Bonney Lake’s new coach at the Sumner School District school board meeting on Wednesday. He beat out more than two-dozen applicants.
Silbaugh said he has no immediate plans to bring in other assistant coaches, choosing to keep continuity in the Panthers’ program.
“Bonney Lake has a great coaching staff,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of history with some of those guys there.”
Silbaugh, who played and coached at the University of Puget Sound, said he’ll meet with players next week. He had the chance to speak to some during the interview process.
“Those guys are looking for somebody to get behind,” he said.
Silbaugh will teach social studies at Bonney Lake, the same course he teaches at Lakes.
He acknowledged that playing in the SPSL 3A with Lakes will present an interesting dynamic when the teams meet in the fall.
“It’s going to be hard,” Silbaugh said. “I’ve developed a lot of relationships (at Lakes) over the last eight years. But I’m going to get my kids ready to play and it’s going to be exciting.”
Sumner School District athletic director Tim Thomsen sent out today this press release, regarding Bonney Lake High hiring Jason Silbaugh as its head football coach.
