Basketball: 14 players with Washington ties in the NCAA Tournament

Are you looking for a team to back in the NCAA Tournament because your favorite school missed out? Maybe you want to root for a team with local ties?

Even if you’re not a Gonzaga fan, you still can.

Fourteen players that played high school ball in Washington are spread out among eight teams in the tournament. From Rainier Beach’s Nyandigisis Moikobu at Iona to Chelan’s Joe Harris at Virginia to the five Evergreen State guys at Montana, the state of Washington is represented in the NCAA Tournament.

EAST REGION

No. 13 seed Montana Grizzlies
F Mathias Ward, 6-7, Junior, Gig Harbor c/o 2008
Montana’s third-leading scorer at 11.1 points per game is shooting 54.5 percent from the field

G Shawn Stockton, 6-1, Senior, Ferris c/o 2008
The Griz’ seventh man has played in all 31 of Montana’s games

G/F Kevin Henderson, 6-5, Freshman, Auburn c/o 2011
Henderson has played in 19 games, averaging 4.7 minutes per game

F Eric Hutchison, 6-9, Sophomore, Mark Morris c/o 2009
Averages seven minutes per game

F Mike Weisner, 6-7, Freshman, Walla Walla c/o 2011
Averages seven minutes per game

Montana will play No. 4 seed Wisconsin at 11:10 a.m. Thursday

No. 7 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs
G Gary Bell, 6-1, Freshman, Kentridge c/o 2011
Fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per game, and shooting 47.4 percent from beyond the arc

G David Stockton, 5-11, Sophomore, Gonzaga Prep c/o 2009
Has played in all 31 games, averaging 2.4 assists per game

G Chris Sarbaugh, 6-3, Freshman, Gonzaga Prep c/o 2011
Sarbaugh is red-shirting this season

Gonzaga will play No. 10 seed West Virginia at 4:20 p.m. Thursday

SOUTH REGION

No. 15 seed Lehigh Mountain Hawks
F Jordan Hamilton, 6-6, Senior, Seattle Prep c/o 2008
Hamilton has started 33 games, averaging 6.6 points per game

Lehigh plays No. 2 seed Duke at 4:15 p.m. Friday

WEST REGION

No. 4 seed Louisville Cardinals
PG Peyton Siva, 6-0, Junior, Franklin c/o 2009
A three-year starter, Siva is averaging 9.1 points, 5.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds per game

Louisville plays No. 13 seed Davidson at 10:40 a.m. Thursday

No. 10 seed Virginia Cavaliers

Two-year starter has scored in double figures in 21 games, averaging 11.5 points, 3.9 rebounds per game

Virginia plays No. 7 seed Florida at 11:10 a.m. Friday
