Tahoma High or Mead High at Mat Classic XXIV?
If it is star power you crave, Mead has it – led by seniors Jeremy Golding (145 pounds) and Jordan Rogers (182), and junior Chandler Rogers (160). All are in the Class 4A semifinals. All are favorites to add to their haul of multiple state titles.
But if late-season momentum counts for something … well, it would be foolish to count out Tahoma.
The 4A race is not the only one that appears to be coming down to the wire. Yelm holds a slight advantage over defending champion Enumclaw; four-time champion Deer Park and Centralia are neck-in-neck in 2A; and the girls’ title chase has eight schools with a legitimate chance to claim a title, led by Mount Baker.
After a rough morning, Orting’s bid for four 1A titles in a row picked up in the quarterfinals. The Cardinals have seven wrestlers in the semifinals, led by three-time champion Drew Templeman at 126 pounds.
The headliner coming into the week was the Mead-Tahoma matchup. After one day, the showdown has lived up to its billing. Each school has seven semifinalists. With 92 points, the Bears lead the Panthers (78.5).
