Gonzaga Prep held off Curtis and DaVonte Lacy (center) in the finals of the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament in 2011.

Just as I did during football season, I’ll break down how teams can qualify for the basketball state tournaments. Because the current state tournament format has been used only once, here’s a brief primer.

For instance, when I refer to the “regional round of the state tournament,” I mean the games that will be played on Feb. 24-25. These games will be played at sites around the state and you can see the venues for each classification here. Teams will not play in the Tacoma Dome, Yakima SunDome or Spokane Arena, depending on their classification, until the quarterfinals of the state tournament, which begin on Thursday, March 1.

That out of the way, here’s how teams will qualify for state:

ROAD TO THE TACOMA DOME

CLASS 4A: Boys Basketball

WESCO
Teams to state: Two, plus one to pigtail game with KingCo
Lowdown: The double-elimination tournament begins Wednesday (tonight). The top four teams from WesCo North and top four teams from WesCo South qualified. Two teams from this tournament will receive automatic berths to the regional round of the state tournament, while the third-place team will host KingCo No. 3 in a winner-to-state game on Feb. 21.

KINGCO
Teams to state: Two, plus one to pigtail game with WesCo
Lowdown: The tournament began Tuesday night with a bang when Bothell toppled fourth-ranked Skyline. The Spartans now must win four straight games to reach the state tournament. In winner-to-state games on Friday, Bothell meets Issaquah and Redmond plays Garfield. Joining Skyline in the consolation bracket are Roosevelt, Newport and Ballard.

WEST CENTRAL/SOUTHWEST BI-DISTRICT
Teams to state: Eight
Lowdown: The 16-team bracket won’t be complete until after Wednesday’s regular-season Narrows League games and SPSL tiebreakers. The Narrows will send four teams to this tourney, the SPSL 9 and GSHL two. However, the third-place GSHL team and 10th-place SPSL team will play a pigtail game on Saturday at Auburn HS for the final bi-district berth.
Check back Thursday morning for the filled-in district bracket.

GREATER SPOKANE LEAGUE
Teams to state: One, plus one to pigtail game with CBBN
Lowdown: The GSL’s top four teams will advance to the league tournament, which begins Feb. 14. The tourney champion earns an automatic berth to the regional round of the state tournament, while the runner-up must play the CBBN No. 2 seed in a winner-to-state, loser-out match.

CBBN
