Football: No truth to rumors Banner committed to USC

Zach Banner has fans at UW, USC and Oklahoma in a tizzy over where he'll play football.

Speculation ran rampant on the Internet this weekend that Lakes High offensive tackle Zach Banner gave an oral commitment to USC during his official visit this weekend.

I sent Zach a text shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday and asked him to clear up speculation that he had orally committed to USC.

Here’s his reply: “Did not commit yet…Please make that lots and clear up there”

Look, there are going to more rumors like this until signing day on Feb. 1 and each one will have a 33.3 percent chance of being right — Banner is down to Oklahoma, Washington and USC. Banner hasn’t given many clues publicly about where he’s leaning. Good for him. There’s going to be suspense at his announcement and I’m looking forward to covering it.

Sure, Zach could end up at USC. I know he likes the program. He’s taken two unofficial visits there. The coaching staff has made him feel special, too. After an unofficial visit in the summer, Zach’s family spent a few days at Disneyland and USC sent him a letter each day to the hotel his family stayed at. Now, that’s showing the love.

There’s also lots for him to like about Washington and Oklahoma. He really enjoyed official visits to both schools. Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian has taken over Zach’s recruitment and that can’t hurt UW’s chances.

It’s easy for people to say – “Banner won’t come to the UW”. If he doesn’t come, those people will be able to say; I told you so. And if he does come, they can say; wow, really glad to be wrong. win/win.

Personally, if Zach had said that he was going to announce anywhere “other” than Lakes, I would say that there is a good possibility he will not come to UW.

But we have a VERY deep heritage/tradition with Lakes HS and I can’t see Zach, a lifelong Lakes/Lakewood kid, being the first to hold a public forum at the high school, to go somewhere else. The gasps and silence would be stunning.

I think – without question – he will be a Dawg.
