Editor’s note: Girls basketball rankings will be posted on Tuesday Jan. 3.

BOYS BASKETBALL

CLASS 4A
1. Bellarmine Prep (8-1)
2. Davis (6-2)
3. Snohomish (9-1)
4. Skyline (7-2)
5. Lewis & Clark (6-1)
6. Mount Rainier (8-2)
7. Union (6-3)
8. Roosevelt (7-2)
9. Curtis (7-4)
10. Issaquah (9-1)
Next: Ballard (6-4), Battle Ground (5-3), Beamer (7-2) Central Kitsap (6-3), Central Valley (4-3), Edmonds-Woodway (8-2), Evergreen (8-3), Federal Way (4-3), Gonzaga Prep (4-3), Jackson (7-3), Lake Stevens (7-3), Kent-Meridian (8-3), Kentwood (6-4), Olympia (6-3)

Nine of the Top 10 teams lost at least one game since the last rankings were released on Dec. 19 and no undefeated teams remain in Class 4A.

Bellarmine Prep ascends to the top spot after going 3-1 in the past two weeks. The Lions’ only loss is a 65-62 defeat to Loyola of Los Angeles, which is ranked No. 19 in the country by USA Today.

Preseason No. 1 Davis went 2-2 over break, going down against Post Falls and 3A No. 3 Kamiakin. Skyline also saw its perfect record evaporate with losses to out-of-state teams. Snohomish fell 63-41 to 3A No. 4 Mountlake Terrace for its first loss.

I felt strongly that the first six teams deserved to be included in the Top 10. After that, I went with Union, Roosevelt, Curtis and Issaquah to round out the rankings. All four have good résumés, but solid arguments can be made that Garfield, Kent-Meridian or Beamer should have been ranked.

CLASS 3A
1. Rainier Beach (8-0)
2. Lincoln (9-1)
3. Kamiakin (8-0)
4. Mountlake Terrace (10-0)
5. University (6-1)
6. Bellevue (8-1)
7. Seattle Prep (6-2)
8. Sammamish (8-2)
9. Lakes (3-5)
10. Lake Washington (6-3)
Next: Auburn Mountainview (7-3), Chief Sealth (6-2), Columbia River (8-2), Decatur (6-4), Eastside Catholic (8-3), Ferndale (8-1), Foss (6-1), Franklin (7-2), Kennedy Catholic (6-2), Kennewick (5-2), Mercer Island (7-3), Mountain View (6-2), Nathan Hale (7-2), O’Dea (6-4), Shadle Park (4-3), Shorecrest (6-4), Shorewood (9-2), Sunnyside (7-1), Wilson (8-2)

The rankings in Class 3A were mostly stable throughout December, but the first Top 10 of 2012 provides a big shakeup.

Rainier Beach holds down the No. 1 ranking and Lincoln climbed two spots to No. 2, while undefeated squads Kamiakin and Mountlake Terrace crack the top five.

University of Spokane lost its first game of the season – a 75-72 defeat at Ferris – remains at fift, while Bellevue enters the rankings at No. 6 – the Wolverines’ only blemish is a 70-63 loss to Rainier Beach.

The final three slots went to Seattle Prep, Lakes and Lake Washington. They just as easily could have gone to O’Dea, Foss, Franklin or Sunnyside. To some, Lakes and its 3-5 record might not deserve to be ranked.

Here’s my reasoning: When Lakes went 1-3 at the Wild West Shootout in Reno, it was playing without point guard Andrew Holloway, who stayed at home with a leg injury. With Holloway in the lineup, Lakes nearly toppled 4A No. 1 Bellarmine Prep 57-55, throttled then-No. 5 Union 55-42 and lost to No. 2 Lincoln 62-49. Holloway scored a combined 36 points in those three games. Clearly, he’s a difference-maker for the Lancers.

Lakes will be without center Zach Banner and guard Cedric Dozier this week. Both are in San Antonio for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

CLASS 2A
1. Clover Park (6-2)
2. Squalicum (9-0)
3. Lynden (7-2)
4. Sumner (10-1)
5. Pullman (7-1)
6. Spokane West Valley (7-0)
7. Ellensburg (7-1)
8. Burlington-Edison (8-1)
9. Mark Morris (6-4)
10. Kingston (8-2)
Next: Anacortes (6-3), Archbishop Murphy (4-4), Cedarcrest (6-3), Cheney (5-3), Clarkston (6-1), Grandview (5-3), Lindbergh (6-2), North Thurston (7-3), Port Angeles (9-1), River Ridge (5-5), Sehome (6-3), Spokane East Valley (6-2), Toppenish (6-2), W.F. West (6-4)

Things are more settled in Class 2A, where Clover Park, Squalicum and Lynden hold steady at 1-2-3. Lynden lost games to Kentwood and Kent-Meridian by a combined two points over break. I’m not going to punish the Lions for scheduling good 4A teams and losing a pair of one-point games.

Sumner climbs a few spots to No. 4 and has a big game Tuesday against Clover Park. I’m curious to see how the Great Northern League will shake when it begins league play. Pullman, Spokane West Valley, Cheney, Clarkston and Spokane East Valley have all played well.

CLASS 1A
1. Granger (8-1)
2. Cashmere (6-1)
3. Bellevue Christian (8-2)
4. Naches Valley (8-0)
5. Lynden Christian (7-1)
6. Zillah (8-10
7. Chimacum (8-1)
8. King’s (7-2)
9. Life Christian Academy (7-3)
10. Seattle Christian (6-2)
Next: Charles Wright Academy (6-4), Chewelah (8-2), Colville (6-5), Freeman (5-5), Goldendale (6-1), Montesano (6-2), Newport (6-3), Okanogan (7-2), Omak (6-4), Seattle Academy (6-3), Seattle Christian (6-2), Toledo (6-2)

So, Granger beats previous No. 1 Cashmere 64-56 on Dec. 20. A few days later, Granger loses its first game of the season, falling to 2B White Swan.

Granger might have seen its perfect record blemished, but the Spartans have risen to the top ranking in Class 1A. Cashmere and Bellevue Christian got consideration, but Cashmere’s loss to Granger and Bellevue Christian’s early-season loss to Cashmere helped Granger win out.

Or maybe I should have gone with undefeated Naches Valley? Naches Valley has yet to lose a game, but the Rangers are entering the meat of their schedule this week .With games against Zillah and Granger in the next week, we’ll find out if Naches Valley is for real. If the Ranges are perfect after their Jan. 10 game against Granger, it’s going to be hard to rank another team No. 1.
