Football: Recruiting updates on Garnett, Dozier, Banner; plus a peek at 2012 schedule

We’re gearing up for our annual football recruiting packages — Northwest Nuggets and Western 100 — and I’ve been laying the groundwork for those pieces by talking to some local players and coaches the past couple days. I wanted to pass along some timely recruiting tidbits and other football-related information:

As Washington fans no doubt know, the Puyallup High offensive tackle is considering three schools: Stanford, Michigan and Notre Dame. Garnett said he won’t make a decision until after his official visit to Stanford on Jan. 14.

Garnett will play in the Under Armour All-American Game next week in Florida. He had planned to take an official visit to Miami after the game, but recently nixed that.

Garnett said he’ll make his announcement at the end of January at Puyallup High School. He’ll leave how his school of choice is revealed up to his twin sister, Rachel.

“My sister will be my planner,” he said. “She’s good at those kind of things.”

Don’t bother arguing the details with Rachel, she received a debate scholarship to attend Concordia University Irvine in California.

For those wondering, CUI is a seven-hour drive from Stanford. Just sayin’…

Pay no attention to message board rumors that Cedric Dozier is wavering on his commitment to Cal.

“I’m still solid on Cal,” Dozier said Wednesday. “Definitely.”

Lakes coach Dave Miller said he’s asked Dozier if wants to take more than one official visit — Cal was his only trip — but Dozier declines each time.

“He tells me he’s rock-solid on Cal,” Miller said.

Dozier will leave Saturday for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Lakes High offensive tackle Zach Banner clarified to me on Tuesday that he won’t make an oral commitment to any school until he takes an official visit to USC on Jan. 13, which means no announcement will come during the All-American Bowl next week.

Banner said he is down to three schools: USC, Washington and Oklahoma. He’ll make his choice public at a gathering at Lakes High.

“For sure,” Banner said, “I’m going to do it at the school.”

Lakes coach Dave Miller told me his Lancers will visit Bellarmine Prep for a nonleague game in Week 2 next fall. The Lions will return the favor in 2013, playing at Harry E. Lang Stadium.

It’s also probable that the SPSL 3A will work out an agreement with the Greater St. Helens League 4A and 3A teams to fill nonleague games in weeks 3 and 4 next season. I’d like to see Lakes meet Camas, Skyview or Union

Lakes, winners of five straight league titles, could experience some growing pains next season. The Lancers return two starters on offense — receivers Sammie Long and Marquin Russell — and two starters on defense — linebackers Dre Milton and Kevin Thompson.

Of course, the cupboard isn’t exactly bare. Long already has a scholarship offer from Washington, Russell is Class 3A’s reigning 400-meter champion and Milton and Thompson are solid.

Bellarmine Prep, meanwhile, returns some of the area’s top skill-position players in quarterback Sefo Liufau, running back Isaiah Flynn, receiver/defensive back Calvin Chandler and running back Lou Millie.

  1. So much for putting up a fence around the State of Washington and keeping our best recruits at UW. It looks like we are getting only one of five blue chippers from within Washington. I think Sark has at least one other serious problem other than what to do with Holt; we have to keep these kids home, and its only going to get harder now that WSU has a great recruiter of their own in Mike Leach. Not good.
