Well, we’ve got our first real look at the the first round of the state playoffs, and there are some great matchups.

Here are the first-round pairings, along with my initial reactions.

Game times, dates are TBA unless noted
Union at Kentlake, 6 p.m. Friday at French Field
Bethel at No. 2 Woodinville, 7 p.m. Saturday at Pop Keeney Stadium
Central Valley at No. 4 Ferris, 6 p.m. Friday at Joe Albi Stadium
Skyline at No. 7 Mead, 1 p.m. Saturday at Joe Albi Stadium
Edmonds-Woodway at No. 1 Bellarmine Prep, 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Tahoma Stadium
Kentwood at No. 10 Skyview, 6 p.m. Friday at Kiggins Bowl
No. 8 Olympia at No. 9 Lake Stevens, 7 p.m. Saturday
No. 5 Eastlake at No. 6 Federal Way, 7 p.m. Saturday

The Eastlake-Federal Way game sure does jump out at you, right? Two highly-ranked teams, with a combined record of 19-1 meeting in the first round of the state playoffs? That’s probably one of the games I’ll cover next week.

You won’t find third-ranked Chiawana in the bracket because Spokane Central Valley knocked off the Riverhawks 24-0 on Friday. No. 7 Mead and fourth-ranked Ferris also won, which tells me that the Greater Spokane League is tough again. Mead will host Skyline in the first round.

I’ve had Kentlake unranked for the past couple weeks, but after its 49-7 thrashing of Mariner, that will be rectified this week. The Falcons matchup with Union should be a good one.

Game times, dates are TBA unless noted
Eastside Catholic at No. 1 Bellevue, 7 p.m. Friday
Mountain View (Vancouver) at No. 2 Lakes, 7 p.m. Friday at Harry E. Lang Stadium
Southridge at No. 9 Kennewick, 12 p.m. Saturday
No. 8 Seattle Prep at No. 4 Kamiakin, Saturday
No. 10 Mercer Island at Meadowdale, 7 p.m. Saturday at Edmonds Stadium
Kennedy Catholic at No. 5 Camas
Hazen at Capital, 7 p.m. Saturday at Ingersoll Stadium
Mount Si at No. 3 O’Dea

Yeah, you’re reading the bracket correctly. Second-ranked Lakes could potentially host No. 1 Bellevue in the quarterfinals. Those two teams appear to head-and-shoulders above the rest, but, who knows? Glacier Peak did give Bellevue a scare, losing 28-17.

CBBN teams swept through the state play-in games, shutting out the GSL’s University and Mount Spokane. Kind of the opposite of what happened in the 4A games. Kamiakin is solid and I really like Kennewick, which has only given up 56 points this season.

If it happens, the Mercer Island-Camas game should be fantastic. Both teams are good enough to reach the finals.

Game times, dates are TBA unless noted
No. 1 Lynden at No. 4 North Thurston, 2 p.m. Saturday at South Sound Stadium
Interlake at Franklin Pierce, 7 p.m. Friday
W.F. West at Sequim
Lindbergh at Lakewood
Steilacoom at No. 5 Othello
No. 6 Archbishop Murphy at No. 2 Tumwater, 7 p.m. Friday
Yakima East Valley/Spokane West Valley winner at No. 3 Prosser
No. 9 Cheney-Ellensburg winner at No. 8 Deer Park

The big first-round matchup could be a rematch of last year’s state final: No. 6 Archbishop Murphy at No. 2 Tumwater.

I’ll run down first-round matchups for 1A and 2B, if I can find enough information, this weekend.
