The News Tribune’s Week 5 Prep Football State Rankings

I’m at CenturyLink Field, helping cover the Arizona-Seahawks game, so I don’t have enough time to provide an in-depth rationale for this week’s rankings.

Here’s the quick-and-dirty version:

4A: No movement at all in the Top 10, as all teams won. Skyview, Davis, Arlington, Woodinville and Union are beating down the door to be ranked. Going to be hard to keep those teams out for much longer.

3A: The first four teams remain the same, Peninsula moves to fifth after Camas lost to Skyview. The Papermakers fall just one spot, which is more of an indicator of how good I believe Skyview is than anything else. Kennewick leaps into the Top 10, despite losing to Kamiakin, 14-6. If Kamiakin is a top-four team, then Kennewick is pretty good, too.

2A: North Thurston holds steady at No. 5, despite losing, 43-36, to No. 3 Tumwater. All the teams below North Thurston have worse losses than losing to the defending state champions. Cheney falls out and Lakewood pops in. Outside of ATM, the Cascade Conference hasn’t done much, but maybe that will change.

1A: Cashmere cemented itself at No. 1 with a beat-down of Spokane West Valley. Chelan welcomed back quarterback Michael Amsel Jr. and cracks the Top 10.

  1. Although its been said that the Cascade Confrence (2A) has not done much thus far, this coming week will be a matchup between two top ten teams. #2 Archbishop Murphy vs. #10 Lakewood will no doubt decide the Cacade Conference championship yet only 5 games into the season.
Both teams come into the game without a loss this season and neither team has been fully tested until now. Both teams have put up big numbers but look for this game to be won with the team with the strongest defence in the second half.
Also this game has been chosen as a comcast pay-per-view game of the week.

  2. Of all the big 9 teams listed in the 4A I believe Davis should be up there. Best receiver/ DB core in the state. at this point they haven’t been able to stop the run, so I wouldn’t place them very high, but they have very talented skills players.
