EDIT: Story from signing day when Walker Williams sings “On Wisconsin”

EDIT: This feature on Walker Williams was published Jan. 21 as part of The News Tribune’s 25th Annual Northwest Nuggets recruiting package.

Tacoma Baptist’s massive offensive tackle Walker Williams, he stands 6-foot-7, 320 pounds, gave an oral commitment on Friday to attend the University of Wisconsin.

“Making the call to tell the Wisconsin coaches, it was a feeling of relief,” Williams said. “They were really excited.”

Williams returned from a trip to the Madison, Wis., campus earlier in the week, having toured UW for the second time since April.

“I really enjoyed pretty much every aspect of the program, from the coaches to the players to the school,” Williams said. “Coaches are down to earth and probably one of my favorite coaching staffs. I do like their style of play. I wish they passed a little bit more, but if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. If you can score 70 points running the ball 90 percent of the time, go do it.”

Coincidentally, the TNT has a big feature planned for Sunday’s newspaper on Williams and fellow offensive tackles Joshua Garnett of Puyallup and Zach Banner of Lakes

Here’s an interview with Williams I did on Thursday — a day before he committed, though his mind was made up when this interview was done. He talks about his recent trip to Wisconsin, including a visit to the campus’ nuclear reactor laboratory.
