I was visiting family on the East Coast when Bellarmine Prep receiver Michael Rector and Gig Harbor kicker/punter Korey Durkee gave oral commitments to play football at the University of Washington. So, my story on Rector and Durkee is a little late, but I wanted to catch up with them on their decision to attend UW and what they’re up to this summer.

There are a few things that didn’t make it into the story that I wanted to mention:
Rector told me he won’t attend anymore camps this summer. He’ll train with his high school teammates, particularly quarterback Sefo Liufau. Rector said the two “get together a lot during summer” to improve their passing-and-catching relationship.
After reaching the Class 4A state semifinals last year, and with most of the team returning, Bellarmine Prep figures to be a team with a target on its back. That won’t faze the Lions, Rector said.
“We push ourselves, we don’t need other teams to push us,” Rector said. “We’ve got a saying, ‘Other teams come to beat us. We come to be us.”
