Track: Updates from Day 2 of 4A, 3A bi-district meets

We’re back at Mount Tahoma Stadium for finals of the 4A and 3A West Central/Southwest bi-district track and field meets.

Before I get to today’s action, here’s a roundup from Friday:

My story on the 4A meet

Todd Milles’ story on the 3A meet

And a story on the 2A meet at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner

As for today, here’s what happened a couple hours into the meet:

  • After battling back spasms the day before, Gig Harbor’s Maureen Tremblay became the fourth girl in Washington, regardless of classification, to break the five-minute barrier in the 1,600. Tremblay made her move with about 300 meters to go, pulling away from the pack and finishing in 4:59.47.

Auburn Riverside’s Korey Krotzer immediately broke away from the pack in the boys 1,600, but Olympia’s Nate Brennand reeled him in and held off a late charge, edging Krotzer by two-hundredths of a second and finishing in 4:14.09.

Kent-Meridian’s Derrick Daigre blistered the field in the 800, finishing in 1:51.72.

Girls Basketball: BP’s Hartwell signs with Georgia Tech

Bellarmine Prep basketball standout Sarah Hartwell has signed to play at Georgia Tech.

“I love that it’s like a family,” said Hartwell, an all-state guard. “The team, the coaching staff, it’s great.”

Hartwell initially signed a letter of intent to play at Xavier University. She was released from that commitment last month when Musketeers coach Kevin McGuff left the program to coach at the University of Washington.

Hartwell visited the Atlanta college earlier this month. While there, she spoke with Lincoln High School graduate Alex Montgomery, who played basketball for Georgia Tech and was recently selected in the first-round of the 2011 WNBA Draft.

Track: Updates from 4A, 3A bi-district meet at Mt. Tahoma

According to Athletic.net, seven of the eight fastest times in the 100 and nine of 10 fastest times in the 200 have been run by girls at the 4A bi-district meet. That makes for some loaded prelims.

I spoke with sprinters Sarah Hartwell of Bellarmine Prep and Federal Way’s Marjerae Gates and both said they viewed the bi-district meet for what it is, a state-qualifying meet. Sure, they’re racing to win, but they know all they need to do to advance to state is to place among the top eight to here.

The finals in the 4A girls 100 and 200 should be just as competitive, maybe more, than what we’ll see next week.

Here’s video of the first heat of the 4A girls 100-meter race, won by Curtis High School’s Kennadi Bouyer.

Big weekend of prep sports, we’ve got it covered

The track and field gods are smiling upon us today in Western Washington. We’ve got blue skies and maybe the first 70-degree day in 198 days for the 4A and 3A bi-district meets at Mount Tahoma Stadium.

I’ll be here all day today and Saturday, along with TNT reporter Todd Milles. We’ll be posting updates here on the blog, including some video. Count on photographer Lui Kit Wong to post a stellar photo gallery of the meet, as well. (Check out this fantastic photo he made).

We’ve also got a reporter at the 2A district meet today at
