Here are my predictions on how the class 4A and 3A boys and girls basketball state tournaments will play out.

CLASS 4A BOYS BASKETBALL PREDICTION

I ended up with Garfield and Curtis in the final, but it could have gone a few other ways. Difficult to pick were the Davis-Jackson and Gonzaga Prep-Kentridge matchups.

I was impressed with Davis’ win over second-ranked Ferris and went with the Pirates. Of course, Jackson’s Brett Kingma is entirely capable of making that pick look foolish. Jackson’s good enough to win the whole tournament.

Another player capable of loading a team on his shoulders is Kentridge’s Gary Bell. Depending on who you ask, Bell is the best player in the state. I’d love to see a Garfield-Kentridge matchup in the semifinals to see Bell and Tony Wroten go head-to-head. But I went with Gonzaga Prep, picking a team with state-tournament experience and guard Chris Sarbaugh, who will be Bell’s future teammate at Gonzaga University.

Keep an eye on Puyallup. If Garfield overlooks the Vikings, they’ll be in for a long game. Puyallup can run and score with any team in the state.

CLASS 3A BOYS BASKETBALL PREDICTION

No team in Class 3A is playing better than Bellevue at the moment. The Wolverines blasted through the Sea-King District tournament and crushed Decatur in the regional round of the state tournament.

That said, Chief Sealth could derail Bellevue in the quarterfinals. The Seahawks are solid, having faced good competition in the Metro League, and upset No. 2 Lincoln on Saturday.

Bellevue toppled O’Dea in the semifinals of the Sea-King District tournament. I see O’Dea getting some revenge. That’s if the Irish can get past Lakes and the winner of Kamiakin-Seattle Prep. Not an easy path.

If Federal Way can stay healthy, the Eagles will be tough to beat.

Chiawana showed its mettle in a 69-65 double-overtime win over Gonzaga Prep in a winner-to-Tacoma, loser-out game on Saturday. The Riverhawks are young, but talented and could have enough to win a state title in the school’s second year.

The bottom-half of the bracket is tough to figure – any of the four teams has a legitimate shot to reach the final. Bellarmine Prep has been hit hard by injuries recently, though forward Ionna Price did play some last weekend. Woodinville enters with a 12-game winning streak and its 24-point win over Mount Rainier last week was impressive. Edmonds-Woodway has lost only once – a 44-43 defeat to Marysville-Pilchuck on Feb. 9 – in 2011. With wins over Gonzaga Prep and Chiawana, plus its state-tournament pedigree, Lewis & Clark can’t be counted out.

More than any other tournament, I feel most comfortable with my title-game pick here. Undefeated Holy Names must be considered a virtual lock to get back to the final. And Prairie, even without Heather Corral, showed it’s a worthy contender.
