CLASS 4A BOYS BASKETBALL
Regional Round of the State Tournament

REGION 1 at Jackson HS
Friday

Game 1: No. 9 Kentridge (18-8) vs. Arlington (19-7), 5:45 p.m. (loser out)
Game 2: No. 5 Auburn (21-5) vs. No. 4 Jackson (21-2), 9:15 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals)
Saturday
Game 3: G1 winner vs. G2 loser, 3 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals, loser out)
Lowdown: There’s no shortage of superstars in this regional. Kentridge has Gonzaga-bound guard Gary Bell, perhaps the best all-around player in the state; Auburn boasts guard Kevin Henderson, who led his team to two wins over Kentridge in the last two weeks; and hot-shooting Jackson guard Brett Kingma, who will play at Oregon. … Kingma, who led Jackson to the state finals last season, is averaging 30.3 points per game. The Timberwolves have not lost since falling to 3A No. 2 Lincoln, 77-60, on Jan. 17. … Bell scored a West Central District tournament-record 47 points in a winner-to-state, loser-out game against Bellarmine Prep on Feb. 19. … Arlington won three straight loser-out games to get to the regional round.

REGION 2 at Juanita HS
Friday

Game 1: Olympia (21-3) vs. Monroe (17-6), 6 p.m. (loser out)
Game 2: Kentwood (17-8) vs. No. 1 Garfield (21-3), 8 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals)
Saturday
Game 3: G1 winner vs. G2 loser, 3 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals, loser out)
Lowdown: The defending state champion Conquerors meet one of the favorites to win the 2010-11 title in the first round. The Tony Wroten-led Bulldogs haven’t budged all season from their No. 1-ranking. With Wroten in the lineup, Garfield has not lost to an in-state team since falling to 3A No. 1 O’Dea on Jan. 4. … Garfield shouldn’t take Kentwood lightly. The Conks slew three giants before falling to Curtis in the bi-district title game on Monday, defeating No. 9 Kentridge, No. 7 Olympia and No. 5 Auburn. … Led by Seattle Pacific University-signee Alex Weber-Brader, Narrows League 4A champion Olympia is at state for the first time since 1999. … Forward Cole Parker and guard Joey Roppo lead Monroe in scoring at 13 points per game.

REGION 3 at Puyallup HS
Friday

Game 1: Gig Harbor (13-10) vs. Ballard (15-8), 6 p.m. (loser out)
Game 2: No. 8 Puyallup (20-6) vs. No. 3 Curtis (20-5), 8 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals)
Saturday
Game 3: G1 winner vs. G2 loser, 3 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals, loser out)
Lowdown: Fierce rivals Curtis and Puyallup meet for the fourth time this season. Curtis won the last two matchups, but Curtis has not won at Puyallup since Jan. 18, 2008. Since a lackadaisical loss at Rogers on Jan. 21, Curtis has won 10 straight games, including a 68-66 victory over Puyallup in the bi-district semifinals. Washington State-bound guard Davonte Lacy is Curtis’ leading scorer, averaging more than 20 points per game. Forwards Julian Vaughn and Darius Johnson-Wilson are capable of double-doubles. … Puyallup has back at state for the first time since 2004. Vikings guard Jay Balmer needs six points to move into second place on Puyallup’s all-time scoring list. Despite no starter taller than 6-foot-2, Puyallup does not struggle offensively, averaging close to 80 points per game. … Ballard forward Salim Gloyd leads his team in scoring, averaging 21.0 points per game. The Beavers’ last trip to state was in 2002. … Gig Harbor finished fourth in the Narrows League 4A, but clawed through the consolation bracket of the bi-district tournament to reach state.

REGION 4 at Richland HS
Friday

Game 1: Evergreen (Vancouver) (17-7) vs. No. 2 Ferris (Spokane) (22-2), 5:45 p.m. (loser out)
Game 2: No. 10 Davis (Yakima) (20-3) vs. No. 6 Gonzaga Prep (Spokane) (19-3), 9:15 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals)
Saturday
Game 3: G1 winner vs. G2 loser, 3 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals, loser out)
Lowdown: At least one ranked team won’t make it out of this regional. Davis junior guard David Trimble earned MVP honors in the 4A Columbia Basin/Big Nine, leading the Pirates to the league title. A youthful Davis squad reached the state tournament last year. … Defensive-minded Gonzaga Prep ended Ferris’ 20-game winning streak when it defeated the Saxons 58-50 in the District 8 title game on Feb. 18. Ferris bounced back from the loss by destroying Richland, 83-60, in a winner-to-state, loser-out game. If the Saxons and Bullpups play each other on Saturday, it will be their fourth meeting this season.

CLASS 4A GIRLS BASKETBALL
Regional Round of the State Tournament

REGION 1 at Jackson HS
Friday

Game 1: No. 2 Auburn Riverside (21-4) vs. No. 9 Edmonds-Woodway (22-4), 4 p.m. (loser out)
Game 2: No. 10 Kentwood (19-6) vs. Lake Stevens (20-3), 7:30 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals)
Saturday
Game 3: G1 winner vs. G2 loser, 1 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals, loser out)
Lowdown: The last two Class 4A state title winners are in this regional. Defending champion Auburn Riverside had won 10 games in a row before Mount Rainier stunned the Ravens, 57-39, in the bi-district quarterfinals. Boston College-signee Kat Cooper leads the Ravens in scoring, averaging 19 points per game. … Edmonds-Woodway rolled through its league season undefeated, but lost in the first round of the league tournament and had to win four straight loser-out games to qualify for state. … Lake Stevens, which won the Northwest District tournament, is led by Brooke Pahukoa, who averages 15 points per game. … Kentwood has a trio of experienced seniors in guard Kylie Huerta and forwards Courtney Johnson and Liz Mills.

REGION 2 at Inglemoor HS
Friday

Game 1: Mount Tahoma (18-5) vs. Monroe (14-9), 8 p.m. (loser out)
Game 2: No. 7 Mount Rainier (21-4) vs. Woodinville (19-5), 6 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals)
Saturday
Game 3: G1 winner vs. G2 loser, 1 p.m. at Juanita HS (winner to state quarterfinals, loser out)
Lowdown: Woodinville enters the regional round as hot as any team in the state, owning an 11-game winning streak. During that stretch, senior forward Melissa Gilkey is averaging 19.8 points per game. … Mount Rainier is one of the bigger surprises this postseason. The youthful Rams stunned No. 2 Auburn Riverside, 57-39, in the bi-district quarterfinals, showing they can hang with the best. Freshman forward Brittany McPhee shared co-MVP honors in the SPSL North. … Mount Tahoma guard Deborah Anderson can strike from anywhere on the court and 30-point games are hardly rare. Inside, the Thunderbirds have a presence in shot-blocker Jessi Williamson. … Monroe got hot at the end of the season, advancing to the Northwest District finals. Guard Suzanna Ohlsen is averaging 22.0 points per game.

REGION 3 at Rogers (Puyallup) HS
Friday

Game 1: South Kitsap (19-4) vs. Skyline (16-8), 6 p.m. (loser out)
Game 2: No. 1 Bellarmine Prep (20-3) vs. No. 5 Federal Way (23-2), 8 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals)
Saturday
Game 2: G1 winner vs. G2 loser, 1 p.m. At Puyallup High School (winner to state quarterfinals, loser out)
Lowdown: When healthy, Federal Way might be the team to beat. The Eagles had a scare two weeks ago when Washington-bound forward Talia Walton suffered a partial tear to the MCL in her right knee. She missed two games – Federal Way lost the first contest to Auburn Riverside, 66-51, and then walloped Tahoma, 75-40 – before returning in the bi-district quarterfinals. Walton is averaging 17.3 points per game since then and helped the Eagles win the bi-district tournament. … Injuries have hit Bellarmine Prep hard in the last couple weeks. Forward Ionna Price sprained an ankle in the first round of the bi-district tournament and forward Nyzhe Primas was lost for the season with a knee injury in the quarterfinals. The Lions still have Xavier-bound guard Sarah Hartwell and forward Simonne Potts, who will play for Air Force, to rely on.

REGION 4 at Richland HS
Friday

Game 1: Evergreen (Vancouver) (17-8) vs. No. 4 Gonzaga Prep (20-4), 7:30 p.m. (loser out)
Game 2: Lewis and Clark (16-6) vs. No. 3 Chiawana (21-2), 4 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals)
Saturday
Game 3: G1 winner vs. G2 loser, 1 p.m. (winner to state quarterfinals, loser out)
Lowdown: Lewis and Clark endured a rough stretch – the Tigers went 4-5 late in the season – but rebounded to claim the District 8 title and return to state for the ninth year in a row. … Gonzaga Prep ended a 14-year drought when it qualified for the regional round of the state tournament. Tia Presley ranks second on the Greater Spokane League’s all-time scoring list with 1,640 points. … Chiawana reached state in its first year last season, placing seventh. With all-league players Hayley Hodgins, Mikaela Rivard and Shelby Ellsworth, the Riverhawks are loaded for a run at the state title. … Evergreen won two straight loser-out games to reach the regional round.
