Signing Day: Bellarmine Prep track & field record-holder signs with UW

Bellarmine Prep senior Quinn Hale credits his older sister Alivia for turning him on to throwing the javelin.

“I was a baseball guy,” Hale said. “My sister was a thrower at Bellarmine Prep and went to state for it. So I tried it.”

Hale began throwing the javelin as a freshman. Three years later, he’s good enough at it that he signed a letter of intent on Wednesday to attend the University of Washington and compete for its track and field team.

Hale became familiar with the Huskies coaches by attending weekly clinics at the Dempsey Indoor Arena during the fall and winter. He said he got along well with the coaches and meshed with future teammates when he took his official visit. And the lure of “competing at the biggest level” was too much to pass up.

Hale set the school record in the javelin last season when he recorded a throw of 204 feet, 10 inches. After spending the offseason in the weight room on power cleans, snatches and squats, while maintaining his agility and flexibility, Hale has his sights set higher in 2011.

“I want to throw 220,” he said. “Anything above that is my goal this season.”
