Allen High School, situated in a suburb north of Dallas, Texas, is building a $60 million football stadium. In a New York Times article, Allen athletic director Steve Williams told the Times, “Look, football has always been a big deal here,” he said. “This is Texas. But this bond project is about much more than football. It’s about our school, our community.”

Allen does need a lot of space. With more than 5,000 students in grades 9-12, it’s the third-largest school in Texas. It has more than 600 members in its band and they need places to sit during games, too.

To be fair, the article points out that residents approved a $119 million bond that included construction of the stadium, a fine arts auditorium and a service center for the district. So, it’s not like other aspects of education are being totally overlooked.
