We’re six weeks into the high school football season and the playoff picture is still hazy. But the fog will clear quickly. While the teams take it one game at a time, we’re looking into the future. All the way to the postseason, in fact.

Below, you will find a league-by-league look at the playoff scenarios for all Class 1A leagues in the state, along with projected matchups for all of the Week 10 state play-in games. When the WIAA releases the state playoff bracket – it could come this week – we will include a glance at what the first round of the state playoffs might look like.

Like we’ve done for the last few years, we will update the projections each week. We’ve provided enough information so that if you don’t agree with our predictions and want to see how the playoff bracket might look with different league finishes, you should be able to do that fairly easily.

CLASS 1A POSTSEASON PROJECTIONS

NORTHWEST DISTRICT
Postseason berths:
Three
Lowdown: We already know what six teams – Meridian, Lynden Christian, Nooksack Valley, Friday Harbor, Coupeville and King’s – will participate in the Week 9 intra-district playoff games. All that’s left is seeding the teams to determine the matchups.

The three winners will advance to the Tri-District tournament, scheduled for Nov. 5, where they will play winner-to-state games.

NISQUALLY LEAGUE
Postseason berths:
Four
Lowdown: The league champion receives an automatic berth to the state playoffs. The league’s second-place team will host the No. 3 seed from the Northwest Districct. The league’s third- and fourth-place teams will play at the Northwest District’s second and first seeds. The games will be played Nov. 5 or 6.

Cascade Christian and Orting are undefeated in league play and will meet on Nov. 1. The winner of that game will probably be the league champion. After that, five teams are within a game of each other.

SW WASHINGTON
Postseason berths:
Five
Lowdown: I’m trying to confirm information on how the Evergreen and Trico divisions determine state playoff qualifiers. I will update here when I get the crossover format.

SCAC
Postseason berths:
Four
Lowdown: First off, I’ve been told that the SCAC will use the same crossover format as last year – the top four teams from the West and East divisions advancing to the postseason with West No. 1 vs. East No. 4, West No. 2 vs. East No. 3 and so on. I have not been able to get this confirmed yet. If you know for sure, leave a comment or send me an e-mail.

In the West Division, undefeated Zillah is the favorite. Goldendale, Cle Elum and LaSalle all have one league loss. In the East, River View, Connell and Royal are all undefeated in league play. On Friday, River View plays at Royal. Kiona-Benton or Wahluke will probably claim the fourth berth.

CARIBOU TRAIL
Postseason berths:
Three
Lowdown: The top three teams will advance to play crossover games against Northeast A League teams. The CTL No. 1 will meet NEA No. 3, CTL No. 2 will play NEA No. 2 and CTL No. 3 is at NEA No. 1. All are winner-to-state, loser-out games.

It’s a two-team race for the league title between Cashmere and Chelan. The teams play at Chelan this week. The teams have a common opponent in Connell, which crushed Chelan, 35-7, and was routed by Cashmere, 26-0.

The third seed will probably come down to Omak and Tonasket. They play this week at Omak.

NORTHEAST
Postseason berths:
Three
Lowdown: The top three teams will advance to play crossover games against Caribou Trail League teams. The CTL No. 1 will meet NEA No. 3, CTL No. 2 will play NEA No. 2 and CTL No. 3 is at NEA No. 1. All are winner-to-state, loser-out games.

Colville and Chewelah sit atop the league standings, tied for first. They will meet on Oct. 29 at Chewelah. Riverside, Lakeside and Freeman are bunched together, going for the final playoff berth.
