When Simonne Potts chose a college, she followed in her parents’ footsteps.
The Bellarmine Prep senior gave an oral commitment this week to play women’s basketball for the Air Force Academy after visiting the Colorado Springs, Colo., campus last weekend.
“There’s nothing greater than serving your country,” said Potts, whose mother and father served in the Air Force and her step-father is on active duty in the Army.
The 5-foot-11 Potts plays in the post for Bellarmine Prep, but will play small forward for the Falcons. Buck Buchanan, who coaches Potts’ Baden Elite AAU team, said Potts should have no trouble making that transition.
“That’s the position she plays during the summer for us,” said Buchanan, a distant relative to the NFL hall of famer with the same name. “She handles the ball well, has a nice jump shot and can shoot the 3-pointer. She’s a slasher and athletic.”
Potts said other schools that showed interest included Missouri, Memphis, Georgetown and William & Mary.
Two of Potts’ Baden Elite teammates are close to choosing a college, too, Buchanan said. Federal Way senior Talia Walton, a 6-foot-2 post, is considering Kentucky, California, Oregon, Washington and Santa Barbara. Lakes senior Stevonna Scott, a 5-foot-7 guard, is being recruited by Memphis, Xavier and Grambling State.
