I’ve been away from the office since Thursday because my wife and I have a brand new baby girl that we’re learning how to take care. I wanted to pass along a link that many of you might be interested in. The Spokane Spokesman-Review is hosting a live chat today with WIAA executive director Mike Colbrese. It’s sure to be dominated by discussion about the new format to the basketball state tournaments.
The chat begins at 1 p.m. today (Monday, June 7) and you can access it here.
I’m in favor of the change because I think placing two classifications under the same roof one the same days will be great for fans. The WIAA likes it because they think it will solve some revenue problems. Coaches don’t like it because they want as many teams as possible to get to the state tournament. While 16 teams will still qualify for state, only eight will get the “state tournament tournament experience.” Most of the coaches understand a change was needed, but they wish they would have been consulted before the WIAA executive board shocked the state when it announced the new format in April. Every side has solid ground to stand on in this debate.
Still up in the air is how and where the round-of-16 will be played. Sounds like a good question for the chat.
And now, back to baby duties…
