Locals win golf state tournament titles

Todd Milles turned in this report from the state golf tournaments:

One local product wanted to join his school’s fraternity of state individual golf champions.

The other wanted to keep pace with his brother.

When it came to finishing off a tournament, Bellarmine Prep’s James Feutz and Life Christian Academy’s Nathan Putnam were in fine form Wednesday.

Feutz, a sophomore, shot his second consecutive 3-under-par 69 to win his first Class 4A title by three strokes over Kentridge’s Sean McMullen at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick.

What to watch at Star Track XXVIII

Class 4A, 3A and 2A today to Saturday at Mount Tahoma Stadium, Tacoma

Class 1A, 2B and 1B Friday and Saturday at Woodward Stadium, Cheney

The marquee event is the mile and it is a three-runner race. Defending champion Shane Moskowitz (4:08.96) beat Auburn Riverside’s Kenny Krotzer at the district meet by five seconds, but Krotzer has a faster time (4:07.24) this season. Ferris’ Adam Thorne (4:11.50) will be a factor. … Tahoma’s Derek Eager has the top mark in 4A the shot put (58-6 ¼), discus (187) and javelin (229-5). … Pasco’s Marques Avery has the state’s fast times in the 100 (10.7) and 200 (21.35), but the predicted wet weather could render rankings moot. … Skyline’s Kasen Williams and Mead’s A.J. Maricich are on track for another battle in the jump. Both have gone 6-11 this season. … The 800 is up for grabs and Puyallup’s Jesse Jorgensen, Kent Meridian’s Derrick Daigre, Ferris’ Justin Zimmerman, Kentwood’s Tim Pettit and Krotzer will all make a push.

Fastpitch: District tournament washed out again

Rain washed out all the seeding games for the West Central District fastpitch tournaments on Tuesday.

No title games were played and teams that were still alive in the winner’s brackets will be awarded district championships. Because semifinals and championship games and consolation bracket games that would determine state seeds were canceled, a power rankings system was used. I’m not clear on the criteria, but reporter Doug Drowley was at the tournaments and he’ll have a story up later.

Here are the seeds to state:

Here are the seedings to state, based on power rankings:

Bellarmine Prep’s James Feutz is tied for the lead after the first round at the Class 4A boys golf state tournament. Feutz and Jarrett Foote of Woodinville each shot 69 at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick today. Beamer’s Broc Johnson is right behind with 70.

Staff writer Todd Milles talked to Feutz this afternoon and we’ll have a story recapping all of the state golf action in tomorrow’s paper.

In other tournaments, Bellarmine Prep’s Jordan Ferreira is second by one stroke in the 4A girls tourney after shooting 69.

Kids can attend state baseball, softball tournaments free

The WIAA has a nice deal to admit kids to the baseball and fastpitch state tournaments on Friday and Saturday.

Each paying adult can bring up to five children (12 and under) for free into the state baseball tournaments at Safeco Field, County Stadium in Yakima or Parker Field in Yakima. The deal also applies to the 4A and 3A fastpitch state tournaments at S.E.R.A in Tacoma.

The only hitch is that each child must wear a piece of their team uniform (team shirt
or hat), and must present one of the coupons at the ticket window.
