A week ago, Federal Way was struggling to qualify for the league playoffs. Now, the Eagles are the kings of the West Central District.
Kelyn Rowe’s goal in overtime lifted Federal Way, the SPSL’s seventh seed, an improbable 1-0 victory over Narrows League champion Gig Harbor in a winner-to-state, loser-out match.
“Being the No. 7 seed from the SPSL and knocking off the No. 1 team from Narrows League, that’s incredible,” Federal Way coach Jason Baumgardt said. “This is just a huge win.”
In earlier games at Mount Tahoma on Saturday, Bellarmine Prep dispatched Auburn Riverside 4-0 in the first of three winner-to-state, loser-out games. The Lions got goals from Scott Hanson, Michael Dick, Mark Beck and Curtis Pederson.
In the first round of the 4A state tournament, Bellarmine Prep will travel to the Northwest District No. 1 Lake Stevens.
In the second game, Stadium beat Auburn 3-0. Dylan Gaydosh scored two goals in the span of about a minute midway through the first half. The second goal came on a header with an assist from Jamael Cox, who also scored in the second half.,
Stadium will play at the District 2/4 No. 1 seed.
Over at Bethel High School, Beamer beat South Kitsap 2-0 and will play at the District 2/4 No. 2 seed in the first round of the state playoffs.
Puyallup beat SPSL South champion Decatur 1-0 in overtime on Trevor Whitt’s goal in the 82nd minute.
SPSL North champ Jefferson beat Wilson 4-1.
