Gary Bell will play at Gonzaga

Gary Bell will be a Gonzaga Bulldog.

The Kentridge basketball star gave an oral commitment on Monday to play for the Spokane school. Bell, widely regarded as one of the top players on the West Coast, made the decision after visiting the school with his family last weekend.

“He liked the family atmosphere, the players, the coaches. They definitely made him feel real welcome,” Gary Bell Sr. told the Spokesman-Review. “It’s just a good family atmosphere and it’s a winning program. Everybody embraced him. It’s official: WIAA changes state hoops tourney format

The WIAA will implement a new structure to the state basketball tournaments beginning in the 2010-11 season.

The plan calls for a 16-team tournament, but the first round games would be single-elimination and played at regional sites. Eight teams would advance to the state tournament venue for the second, third and fourth rounds, which would be double-elimination.

With just eight teams advancing to the state venue, boys and girls tournaments for two classifications would be played at same time at the same site. Class 4A and 3A tourneys would be at the Tacoma Dome, 1A and 2A will be at the Yakima SunDome and Spokane Arena will host the 1B and 2B events. All tournaments would be held during the same week.
