Gary Bell will be a Gonzaga Bulldog.

The Kentridge basketball star gave an oral commitment on Monday to play for the Spokane school. Bell, widely regarded as one of the top players on the West Coast, made the decision after visiting the school with his family last weekend.

“He liked the family atmosphere, the players, the coaches. They definitely made him feel real welcome,” Gary Bell Sr. told the Spokesman-Review. “It’s just a good family atmosphere and it’s a winning program. Everybody embraced him. As soon as he left from shaking Coach (Mark) Few’s hand and went to the hotel, he said, ‘I’m ready.’

“I told him, ‘OK son, sleep on it.’ Today he came in and said, ‘I think I want to commit. I told him I was 100 percent behind him.”

Bell, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, had scholarship offers from seven schools, including California, UCLA and Washington. Bell Sr. said his son visited California and Washington.

Bell is Bulldogs’ coach Mark Fews second commitment for the 2011 recruiting class, joining Nampa (Idaho) Skyview High School guard Kyle Dranginis.

Bell is a three-year starter and two-time The News Tribune All-Area selection. He was named to the TNT’s all-classification all-state team after the 2009-10 season. Bell is rated as 53rd on ESPN’s Super 60 list for players in the Class of 2011. Garfield guard Tony Wroten, who has not committed to a school, is No. 11.
