What to watch today

The state’s top senior girls basketball players will gather for the WIBCA All-State games today. Athletes from all six classifications will be represented.
Time: 1B vs. 2B, 3 p.m.; 1A vs. 2A, 5 p.m.; 3A vs. 4A, 7 p.m.
Where: Seattle Christian High School

Friday’s highlights

Orting’s Nick Wilkins struck out 18 batters and led the Cardinals to a 7-0 victory at Seattle Christian. Wilkins scattered three hits in seven innings and also drove in three runs.

Stadium pitcher Andre Jankanish fanned eight batters and held Foss to four hits in the Tigers’ 3-2 win.

Curtis’ Jacob Hoffman threw a complete game, scattering five hits and striking out six, in the Vikings 11-1 win against Rogers.

Auburn girls hoops coach resigns

Auburn girls basketball coach Ed Bender has resigned his position, athletic director Bob Jones announced today.

Bender, who will continue to teach at Auburn, guided the Trojans to the district tournament this season and the state tournament in 2007.

Jones was complimentary of Bender.

“I credit Ed for all the hard work he put into our program to help make us a playoff contender again,” Jones wrote in an e-mail. “This will be a great loss for our girls and for our community. Ed has spent many years committed to Auburn High girls basketball and has made a positive

Thursday’s highlights

Auburn Riverside’s Kenny Krotzer ran to victories in the 800, 1600 and 3200 in the track and field meet against Beamer, leading the Ravens to an 87-45 win.

Rogers athletes won all but two events, led by Terrance Stubblefield’s first-place finishes in the 100, 110 hurdles and long jump, in its track meet against Bethel.

Peninsula’s Malich reaches milestone victory

Peninsula will celebrate baseball coach Marco Malich’s 400th victory today after its 4 p.m. home game against Enumclaw. No, the Seahawks aren’t counting on a win against the Hornets, Malich recorded the milestone victory last week.

Malich has been the coach at Peninsula since 1980.

All-State Girls Hoops Contests

The state coaches association’s girls all-state basketball games will be played Saturday at Seattle Christian High School. Here’s the schedule:

1B vs. 2B, 3 p.m.
1A vs. 2A, 5 p.m.
3A vs. 4A, 7 p.m.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for students.

Tuesday’s highlights

Puyallup’s Scott Kuzminsky struck out 12 batters in eight innings as the Vikings beat rival Emerald Ridge 3-2 in nine innings.

Jordan Copeland, Jacob Hoffman and Rayne Raven each hit home runs for Curtis in the Vikings’ 17-4 win against Spanaway Lake. Bryan Burgher went 3-for-4 for two home runs for the Jaguars.

Austin Voth struck out 10 batters for Kentwood in its 9-1 win at Federal Way.

Narrows League will divide into 4A, 3A divisions

The Narrows League will be divided into 4A and 3A divisions, beginning in the fall.

The multi-classification, 14-school conference will have eight 4A schools – Bellarmine Prep, South Kitsap, Stadium, Central Kitsap, Olympia, Gig Harbor, Mount Tahoma and Shelton – and six 3A schools – Foss, Wilson, Yelm, Lincoln, Timberline and Capital.

District denies Federal Way’s appeal

Federal Way High School is the newest member of the SPSL South.

The West Central District has denied the Eagles’ appeal to overturn the decision of the SPSL principal’s association that moved Federal Way from the league’s North Division.

Jerry Holsten, president of the WCD and principal at South Kitsap, said the district heard Federal Way’s appeal on March 15 and made its ruling on Friday. He said the principals followed appropriate guidelines when the association voted to place Federal Way in the SPSL South.
