The News Tribune’s Northwest Nuggets high school football recruiting package will run in Sunday’s newspaper and online. Washington football beat writer Todd Milles and myself have been working the phones the last couple weeks for this year’s edition, the 23rd that The News Tribune has completed.
Here’s a note on Auburn lineman Danny Shelton to hold you over until Sunday.
SHELTON SLIMS DOWN
Auburn lineman Danny Shelton has shed about 40 pounds since the end of the football season. The 6-foot-3 junior says he weighs around 283 pounds.
Shelton turned out for the Trojans wrestling team for the first time and credited the grueling workouts to his weight loss. He must weigh less than 285 pounds to be eligible to wrestle in the heavyweight division.
One thing Shelton is packing on in bulk is scholarship offers. Cal was the first to offer the two-time All-Area selection and Oregon, Oregon State and Washington quickly followed.
Shelton said playing time was his “No. 1 thing” in choosing a school, but he’ll talk with his family to ensure he makes the best decision.
Shelton said he is not close to committing, but said Washington was his favorite, adding that he’s impressed with what coach Steve Sarkisian has done in one season.
“I think Sark is doing a lot of good things for UW,” he said.
