Slew of big hoops games on Wednesday’s schedule

If I were ESPN, I would come up with some ridiculous slogan for today’s slate of big prep basketball games. Something like, “Wild Wednesday,” “End of the Year Extravaganza,” or “Prep Hoops Hysteria.”

But I’m not, so I won’t give a sensational title to the games on the docket today. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be interested. Here’s what we’ve got:

Boys Basketball
Bellarmine Prep at No. 2 Gonzaga Prep:
Can B-Prep sweep the all-Jesuit tournament and prove they’re a team to be reckoned with? The Lions dispatched 3A No. 6 Seattle Prep on Tuesday.

No. 3 Curtis vs. Kentridge: Two SPSL teams ran through the Spokane Holiday Showcase, reaching the finals of the tournament. The Vikings have been a pleasant surprise — to everyone but themselves — this season. Can they keep their perfect record intact against Gary Bell and the Chargers?

Gig Harbor vs. Jefferson: Two teams looking for respect. The Tides boast big-time scorers in Brandon Gagliardi and Austin Seferian-Jenkins. The Raiders scored a slew of early-season upsets before tailing off recently. Did Tuesday night’s win over No. 8 Decatur put Jefferson back on track?

No. 5 Mead vs. Puyallup: Tiny Jare Sager lifted Puyallup to a 49-47 win over Wenatchee on Tuesday with a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Sager and dead-eye shooter Jay Balmer will have to come through on the perimeter again if the Vikings are going to topple the Panthers, who should be focused after losing to Auburn on Tuesday.

Girls Basketball
No. 2 Lewis & Clark at No. 1 Auburn Riverside:
Thanks a lot for ruining this matchup, Federal Way. The Eagles edged LC 75-72 on Tuesday, taking some of the shine off this No. 1 vs. No. 2 contest. Still, it should be a good test for both teams. Can LC regroup and are the Ravens worthy of the state’s top ranking?
