Three Auburn football players have been suspended for the remainder of the season for violating the school’s athletic code.

According to Auburn principal Richard Zimmerman, school administrators “discovered something wasn’t right” when the three players and a few other students arrived at the school’s homecoming dance on Saturday. Zimmerman said he could not reveal the players’ names, “but it will be obvious at the game who was suspended.”

Multiple sources have confirmed that senior running back and safety Chris Young was one of the players suspended. Young, who has given an oral commitment to play at the University of Washington, has rushed for 1,424 yards and 26 touchdowns this season.

Zimmerman would not specify the rules the students violated, but according to the school’s athletic rules of conduct, a first violation of the athletic code results in students being “immediately ineligible for interscholastic competition in the current sport for 25 participation days or for the remainder of the season, whichever is longer.” Zimmerman said the students that do not play sports will face other consequences.

Auburn (9-0) is the No. 3-ranked team in Class 4A and completed the regular season as SPSL North champions. The Trojans will host Kamiak (4-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Auburn athletic director Bob Jones and football coach Gordon Elliott were told not to comment.
