Kentridge, Tahoma win volleyball tie-breaker; SPSL playoffs set

Kentridge and Tahoma emerged from a three-team SPSL North tie-breaker on Wednesday night with berths to the league playoffs. The Chargers topped Kent-Meridian 2-0 in the first match for the No. 4 seed and the Bears beat the Royals 2-1 in the second match for the fifth seed.

That finalizes the seedings and pairingsfor the league tournament on Saturday at Beamer High School.

WIAA Fall Academic State Champions

A handful of South Sound teams have won academic state championships.

Boys Cross Country
Class 4A – Stadium, 3,760 GPA
Class 3A – Capital, 3.866 GPA

Girls Cross Country
Class 3A – Capital, 3.990 GPA (This was the highest team GPA in the state this fall season.)
Class 2A – W.F. West, 3.860 GPA
Class 1B – Mount Rainier Lutheran, 3.457 GPA

Girls Soccer
Class 3A – Auburn Mountainview, 3.788 GPA

Girls Swimming
Class 3A – Olympia, 3.794 GPA

Football Trip Around the State: Playoff edition

Spokesman-Review reporter Mike Vlahovich lends some clarity to the Greater Spokane League playoff race. Mead has secured a postseason berth, but the other two spots are up for grabs. Why should South Sound fans care? If Auburn is to play for the state title, the Trojans will play their semifinal somewhere in Eastern Washington. That place could be Wenatchee, home of the sixth-ranked Panthers.

Narrows League football playoff seeding breakdown

Four Narrows League teams — South Kitsap, Olympia, Wilson and Central Kitsap — have secured postseason berths, but the fifth seed is still up for grabs for Foss or Gig Harbor. Also, none of the teams are locked into a particular seed. That leaves plenty to play for on Thursday night.

Before we get to the seeding breakdown, here’s this week’s schedule:

Bellarmine Prep at Lincoln
Mount Tahoma at South Kitsap
Central Kitsap at Wilson
Shelton at Gig Harbor
Foss at Olympia

SPSL North volleyball tie-breaker set

Kent-Meridian, Kentridge and Tahoma are in a three-way tie for fourth-place in the SPSL North. The top five teams qualify for the SPSL crossover matches, meaning one of these three teams will be left out of the postseason. To break the tie, the three teams will meet at Beamer High School on Wednesday.

Here’s the schedule:

Game 1: Kent Meridian vs. Kentridge, 6 p.m. (winner seed No. 4)
Game 2: Tahoma vs. Game 1 Loser, 7:15 p.m. (winner seed No. 5)

Matches will be best of three game, third game to 15, no cap.
