Mount Tahoma scored a huge upset of Gig Harbor on Thursday night, stunning the Tides 42-40 in double-overtime.
Gig Harbor (3-5, 3-4 league) opened the second overtime period with Troy Castle breaking free for a 28-yard touchdown run, his third score of the game. Gig Harbor’s conversion failed, giving the Tides a 40-34 lead.
The Thunderbirds answered quickly, scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion to give them their second win in three weeks. It also marked Mount Tahoma’s first win over Gig Harbor in at least a decade, and erased the memory of last season’s 42-8 Tides’ win.
DeAndre Baines led the T-birds (2-6, 1-6 league) with 269 passing yards, completing 11 of 34 passes for one touchdown, and also ran for a touchdown.
Gig Harbor quarterback Barrett Schmidtke finished 10-for-17 for 188 yards and a touchdown. Tides kicker Korey Durkee kicked two field goals
The Tides can still make the playoffs if they beat Shelton and Foss loses to Olympia next week. But if the Falcons win, they will take the Narrows League’s No. 5 seed, leaving Gig Harbor out of the postseason.
