Preseason football rankings: 2B and 1B

Day 5 of releasing our rankings brings us to the 2B and 1B classifications. You can view the 4A rankings here, the 3A rankings here, the 2A rankings here and the 1A rankings here.

We’ve spoken to coaches and high school sports reporters across the state, so I think we’ve got a pretty good handle on what teams are expected to be among the best this season. Of course, “expected” doesn’t mean a team will be one of the best, so take these rankings for what they are: an educated guess based on last year’s performances, returning players and expected contributions from newcomers.

One thing before we get to the rankings. Like we did last year, we’ll be sending out in-game score updates on Friday night via Twitter. I’ll also be sending out a “how the top 10 teams fared” on Friday nights and our weekly rankings on Sunday evening/Monday morning via Twitter. So, if you want to receive all that instantly, you can sign up here

2009 Senior Preaseason All-State Football Team from Ron Siegel

Ron Siegel has been putting together all-state football teams for quite some time. He knows his stuff pretty well. I got a copy of Ron’s 2009 Senior Preseason All-State team this weekend and wanted to pass it along.

Ron’s preseason all-state team is a little different than The News Tribune’s team. Only seniors are eligible. He also has an exhaustive list of the state’s top seniors and juniors.

TNT Preaseason All-State Football Team

After polling coaches and sports writers from across the state, The News Tribune has finalized its 2009 Preseason All-State Football Team.

I think you’ll see that this pre-season all-state team has quite a bit of geographic variety. Players from Eastern Washington, Central Washington, Whatcom County, Vancouver, the Kitsap Peninsula are represented, as well as the greater Seattle and Tacoma areas.

Skyline leads the way with four players — QB Jake Heaps, WR Kasen Williams, LB Anthony DeMatteo and OL Jase Butorac. Heaps and Williams were easy picks. DeMatteo’s status as the reigning KingCo Crest Division Defensive Player of the Year

Prep football season has arrived

I visited Gig Harbor and Lakes on Wednesday, the first day of football practice, and wrote this story to highlight the beginning of the season.

With 18 starters back and nine kids with scholarship offers from Division-I schools, Lakes is clearly loaded. I don’t feel that I’m giving anything away when I say that Bellevue will be No. 1, Lakes No. 2 and Union No. 3 in our Class 3A preseason Top 10. As for the rest of the top 10, it gets a little trickier.

Speaking of rankings, we’re working on our Prep Football Preview Special Section,
