In Sports Illustrated’s The Year in Sports 2008 issue, the magazine listed what happened after the completion of the girls 3,200-meter race at the Class 4A Star Track meet one of the best moments of the year.
Bellarmine Prep’s Nicole Cochrane — and the other runners — thought Cochrane had won the race, but she was disqualified after a judge ruled she had stepped outside of her lane for three consecutive steps.
Days later, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association reinstated Cochrane as the champion. But what happened at the medal ceremony at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco was truly a memorable moment. Shadle Park’s Andrea Nelson, who was awarded first place, took her medal and placed it around Cochrane’s neck. Then the second-place runner gave Nelson her medal and so on.
Cochrane is now attending Harvard University. Sports Illustrated’s write-up has not been posted to its Web site. If it does, I’ll link it here.
