Linebacker Edgar Esquivel intercepted Ben Johnson’s pass near midfield with six seconds remaining to seal it for Cashemere, which came from behind to beat Cascade Christian, 10-9, in the Class 1A state championship game Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.
Derek Todd, the Bulldogs’ star at quarterback, cashed in on another Cascade Christian turnover with his 8-yard TD scamper with more than four minutes to go.
Ben Johnson was intercepted three times in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars got the ball back with under a minute to go after Todd ran out of the end zone for a safety.
Cascade Christian converted a fourth-and-10 on a screen pass to Travis Van Dyke, but Johnson was picked off on the next play by Esquivel.
