Week 9 prep football picks

The playoff picture is coming into focus. The Narrows League finalized its postseason berths last night and victories by Bethel and Enumclaw on Thursday made determined some seeding in the SPSL South and SPSL 3A.

Plenty more to be determined tonight. Kentwood and Kentlake are playing for a trip to the postseason. Bonney Lake is in with a win over Sumner. Tumwater can cap an undefeated regular season with a win over Centralia. Or the Tigers can force a three-way tie for first in the Evergree Conference if they top the Thunderbirds and Black Hills beats W.F. West. On

Top football matchups this week

Kentlake (4-3) at Kentwood (5-2)

7 p.m. today at French Field

The lowdown:
Winner not only sweeps the other three city programs, but will move on to the playoffs. If Kentwood extends its series win streak to six, it clinches SPSL North’s No. 2 seed.

Why the Falcons will win: They won’t even remember they had a four-game skid before last week’s 21-0 shutout victory over Auburn Riverside if they can beat the big-boy program tonight. Kentlake has little margin for error. Establishing RB Taylor Angevine (92 rushes, 561 yards, two

Gaddy talks about choosing UW

I just spent a few minutes interviewing Abdul Gaddy, the University of Washington’s newest and highest-profile basketball commitment. I’m working on a story for Thursday’s paper — I’ll post it here, too — but here are the most interesting nuggets:

– Gaddy said he would have stuck with his original decision to attend Arizona if former assistant coaches Miles Simon and Josh Pastner were still there. Long-time head coach Lute Olson unexpectedly retired last week, prompting Gaddy to give a verbal commitment to the Huskies. He plans on signing during the early signing period in November.

League by league look at football playoff berths

There are fewer “if Team A beats Team B” scenarios this week, but some leagues, especially the Narrows and SPSL 3A, have much to be determined in their final week of the regular season.
