Bellarmine Prep, Puyallup to play for 4A soccer title; other results

Playoff-mainstay Bellarmine Prep will take on tournament-newbie Puyallup in the Class 4A boys soccer title game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

Here’s a rundown on the semifinals:


Bellarmine Prep 3, Eastlake 2:
The Lions withstood a challenge from Eastlake, beating the Wolves 3-2 in a shootout. Bellarmine Prep outshot Eastlake 3-1 in the shootout.

Sophomore Scott Hanson converted the final kick, going to the left and out of reach for Eastlake goalkeeper Robbie Marsh.

Hanson gave the Lions a 2-1 lead when he scored in the 57th minute. Eastlake tied the score 10 minutes later on a header.

Bellarmine Prep improved to 21-1.

Puyallup 1, Todd Beamer 0: The Vikings advanced to their first state title game after beating the Titans for the first time in three matches this season.

Justin Veltung, The News Tribune’s All-Area Player of the Year, scored the game’s only goal. It came in the 24th minute when he scorched the ball into the goal from 11 yards out.

Kyle Bilharz recorded the shutout for the Vikings.


Camas and Kennedy will meet in the 3A title game at 5 p.m. at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

In the semifinals, Kennedy beat Mercer Island 3-2, outshooting the Islanders 3-1 in a shootout, and the Papermakers shut out Lakeside 1-0.


Ready for a rematch?

King’s and Highland each won their Class 1A boys soccer state semifinal matches on Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium, advancing to the finals for the second straight season.

Highland claimed the championship last season, beating the Knights 1-0. King’s will get a chance to avenge that defeat at 5 tonight.

In the semifinals, Highland beat Connell, 1-0, and King’s edged White Salmon, 2-1.

Jesus Silva scored in the 19th minute for the Scotties (17-5). Connell (19-2) outshot Highland, 12-6, but goalkeeper Alavaro Salcedo made eight saves to preserve the shutout.

King’s (17-6) also took an early lead when Trevor Bartels scored in the 26 th minute. White Salmon (18-2) countered with a goal from Cheno Barajas in the 51st minute, tying the score, but Brett Simons scored the game-winner in the 69th minute.

Connell will play White Salmon at 1 p.m. for third place.


Cheney 2, Quincy 1: Harlan Gough’s goal in a shootout catapulted the Blackhawks into their first title game in school history.

Cheney (20-1) will play Sehome at 7 tonight at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. The consolation game is at 3 p.m. Cheney outscored Quincy 3-2 in the shootout, getting goals from Mitchell Weller and Justin Hale.

The Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the second half when Alex Bray scored on an assist from Mitchell Bray. Quincy answered with a goal from Cristian Medina in the 64th minute.

Sehome 3, Cedarcrest 0: The Mariners from Bellingham handed the Red Wolves their first loss of the season, advancing to the finals for the first time since they won the 3A banner in 2002.

Sehome (16-6) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Mike Klein scored and held its 1-0 lead for most of the game until Nino Tursich added a goal in the 68th minute. Minutes later, Max Dewees capped the scoring.

Cedarcrest (20-1-1) will play Quincy at 3 p.m. for third place.
