Video shows Cochrane didn’t commit violation

Video has surfaced that shows Bellarmine Prep distance runner Nicole Cochrane should not have been disqualified.

The video of the Class 4A girls 3,200-meter race at last week’s Star Track track and field meet in Pasco shows that it was Cochrane’s teammate who ran inside the lane line. But an official ruled it was Cochrane and the Harvard-bound runner was disqualified 10 minutes after winning the race.

Gaddy withdraws commitment to Arizona

If Abdul Gaddy and Avery Bradley get their way, the Bellarmine Prep pair will be basketball teammates after they graduate from high school.

Gaddy sent college basketball coaches scurrying to revive recruiting pitches when on Thursday The News Tribune’s All-Area Player of the Year withdrew his oral commitment to attend the University of Arizona. Gaddy, who is rated as the No. 2 point guard in the nation by, and Bradley, a fellow junior and ranked as the No. 9 shooting guard, say they want to be a package deal.

"We’re perfect together," said Bradley, a 6-foot-2 senior-to-be.

XC legend Pat Tyson to coach at Gonzaga

Gonzaga University made a big splash in hiring its first full-time coach in the history of its cross country program. Running guru Pat Tyson was today named the Bulldogs’ coach.

Tyson’s has a history of producing champions. He coached Spokane’s Mead High School to 12 team state cross country titles and nine individual championships. He also guided Shorecrest to two team titles.

In 2005, he was a volunteer coach at the University of Oregon, then he spent the 2006-07 school year at the University of Kentucky before becoming South Eugene (Ore.) High’s coach in January.

The Senior All Star Challenge is set for Saturday at the University of Washington Softball Field.

Here’s the schedule:

Bellarmine Prep wins 4A soccer title

Bellarmine Prep’s boys soccer team beat Puyallup 2-1, outshooting the Vikings 4-1 in a shootout, to claim the Class 4A state championship.

Lions defender Elliot Morton tied the score on a header in the final minutes of regulation.

Justing Veltung scored Puyallup’s goal.

This is the Lions’ second title. They won their previous crown in 2004.


Cascade Christian hurdler wins two events

Cascade Christian sophomore Spencer Ramos added a 1A boys 300-meter hurdles title to the 110-meter hurdles crown he won earlier today.

Ramos took the lead for good at the second-to-last hurdle when he passed King’s Austin Dean.

Ramos turned out for the track team after being persuaded by coach Josh Hoff and he began doing the hurdles about a few weeks into the season. Less than two months later, he’s a double-winner at the state meet.

“I can’t believe it,” Ramos said.
