Mat Classic Finals: Notes

The finals of Mat Classic XX will start in about an hour — the last of the consolation place matches are finishing up right now.

I’ve scoured the results and records and here are some interesting tidbits — to me, at least — that popped up.

Thirty defending champions reached the finals this year

Of those 30, 11 have the possibility of winning a third title next year.

Of those 12, three sophomores — Sedro-Woolley’s Derek Garcia, Republic’s Ryn Rollins and Kelso’s Alisha Beach — could become four-time state champions.

Of the aforementioned 30, only Black Hills’ Jim Belleville can become a four-time state champion next year. Of course, tonight he has to beat Toppenish’s Yuder Pech, who, like Belleville, is a two-time state champion.
