We usually publish our Athletes of the Week in the paper, but the interviews are trimmed to fit space, so I’ve decided to start including the whole interview for people.

Ben Nelson, Puyallup

Nelson, a senior for the Vikings, fired a smooth 3-under-par 33 at High Cedars Golf Course to lead the Vikings to a win Curtis on last Thursday and a 1-over-par at High Cedars on Tuesday to lead Curtis past Bethel.

Did you have any bogeys in your 33?

I had one. I just missed the green and didn’t get up and down.

Do you watch golf on TV?

Sometimes, not all the time. I’ll watch every once in a while just to see who’s winning.

What type of putter do you use?

I have Taylor Made Monza putter. I’ve had it for about three years. I’m pretty comfortable.

What’s the best golf movie ever?

Probably, "Happy Gilmore."

Tiger or Phil?

Tiger. I don’t like Phil. I don’t why I just don’t like Phil.

Would you ever wear one of those tight dri-fit shirts Tiger wears?

No. Never.

What’s your favorite course to play?

Probably, Tacoma Golf & Country Club. It’s in nice shape and really good course. I’ve only played it a couple times, but I really liked it.

Do you have any hole-in-ones?

I have one at the Classic. I got it on No. 15. I knew I had it right away. My dad was with me when I got it.

What song is playing on your iPod right now?

I don’t know, my iPod is broken.

What’s the best thing about golf?

I like that it’s an individual sport.

What’s the worst thing about golf?

How long it takes.

Jaki Hawkins, Lakes

The last time a team scored on a goal on Hawkins in regulation since Sept. 6. Since then she’s been extremely stingy, posting four straight shutouts, including three straight shoot-out wins.

You spell your name differently, most people spell it like J-a-c-k-I, how did you come up with that?

Me and and my grandma, thought the way I spelled my name was too common, so we sat down for about two hours and thought of all the different ways we could spell it, we came up with J-a-k-i. And we changed it in sixth grade.

How many people pronounce it wrong?

Oh my, so many people do, especially when it comes to being announced for soccer games. It be easier to count the people who say my name right.

Do ever talk trash after making a save?

Sometimes, but usually it comes before the save. Like when they do something stupid. They come up on one-on-one, and miss a shot by miles, I just laugh.

Are you watching women’s world cup.

Not really. Softball is more of my thing.

Goalie Hope Solo has started every game for the U.S., but going into the big match with Brazil, the U.S. coach Greg Johnnson has decided to start Brianna Scurry instead, as a goalie do you agree?

I guess it kind of depends on team chemistry, make sure everyone is working together well. I guess I could agree with it, as long other goalie steps in and does as well.

What if it was you?

If I was doing really well, and there was no reason for me to be taken out, I guess I wouldn’t understand. If I was doing bad I wouldn’t be upset.

Is David Beckham good or bad for soccer?

I think he’s great. Everybody loves him. He brings more attention to soccer in the US. I really like the way he talks.

When you are in a shoot-out do you have to have a different attitude?

I have that bad-ass mentality, that nothing is going to get by me. Actually I sing a sing a gangster rap song in my head. My first shoot-out, I was like "Oh my God," so I started singing the song in my head and it helped me relax.

What song is it?

It’s "This is how we do," (by 50 Cent).

So what’s the first song on your iPod?

Probably, a song by Kenny Chesney.

I’m not going to lie, I listen country. I love Kenny Chesney. He’s amazing. He’s kind of short for a guy, and yeah, he’s bald, he’s skinny, but he’s a great peformer. I’ve seen him lots of time.

What’s one TV show you can’t miss?

I’d have to go with "The Hills."

Are you on Team Heidi or Team Lauren?

Oh, I’m on Team Lauren. I can’t stand Spencer. He’s really ugly and he needs to shave.

Have you ever scored a goal?

I scored my very first high school goal earlier this season (Sept. 6 against Washington). We were winning three or four to zero. Coach took me out and at first I was mad. But then they put me in at forward. I was running all over the place. I got two shots on goal, and one went in. I was so excited.

So was it better than making a big save?

No, making a goal was fun, but making that big save is better. Everybody gets pumped up. It makes my heart pound so fast, my adrenaline gets going so much. It’s amazing.
