The Stadium High football job is vacant — again.

Tigers head coach Dan Oppelt stepped down after a year to take a job as the new coach at Wahluke High, a Class 1A school in eastern Washington that plays in South Central Athletic Conference.

Oppelt finished 1-9 in his only season leading the Tigers.

"I think it was a decision based on his family and lifestyle," said Stadium High athletic director Jim Catalinich, who was notified by Oppelt of his intentions to leave last Thursday.

Catalinich said interested candidates should apply on the Tacoma school district’s web site, and send a resume and letter of interest to Catalinich at Stadium High. Catalinich put no timeline on hiring a coach, but said with summer football camps looming time is of the essence.

"I am looking for someone who is hard working, who is knowledgeable and who is willing to make a commitment to bring this program into a competitive, 4A level," Catalinich said about his ideal candidate. "We can’t control the decision someone makes. But we would hope that the person comes in with an interest in being here and making this program successful over a long period of time."

Catalinich would like to bring a level of consistency and stability to Stadium’s fledgling football program.

The Tigers haven’t had a winning season since 1993, and have won 15 games in the past 11 years.

Stadium only has two winning seasons since 1968, and has dealt with instability over the years, with several head coaches cycling through the program.
