Here’s a closer look at Fife track star Angela Jensen. Scroll down for state and local track leaders.
Fife track athlete Angela Jensen has two characteristics that make her hard to beat.
Boundless talent and a work ethic to match.
Both were on display during her outstanding effort at the prestigious Pasco Invitational over the weekend.
The senior won both the 100 hurdles (14.6) and the 300 hurdles (44.73) under less-than-ideal conditions on a rainy Saturday in eastern Washington. Jensen’s time in the 300 is the fastest in the state.
At the midpoint of the track season Jensen seems on track to at least match her performance at the Class 3A state meet last season.
Jensen won the 100 meters and the 300 meters, and finished second in the 100 hurdles last year.
She would like to win all three this season at the Class 2A state meet at Mount Tahoma Stadium.
"She trains like a monster," Fife track coach Brian Meyer said. "She outworks everybody that I have ever coached. She’s always been one of those people on the track that gives everything that you ask of her, and she never quits.
Added Jensen: "I know what I want, and I know how hard I have to push myself to get to where I want to go. And I talk to my coach about my workout, and what I need to that day to get better."
Jensen said a trip to the University of Oregon track camp during the summer of eighth grade year led to a deeper commitment to her sport. She also played volleyball this season and even wrestled, advancing to regionals.
"My wresting coach kind of had to talk me into doing it," Jensen said. "Basketball kind of took a toll on my knees, so it was an alternative way of keeping in shape. But I’m glad I did it. It was fun."
Jensen will compete in track at Washington State next year. At the Palouse she will find a bevy of talented athletes, including heptathletes and twin sisters Diana and Julie Pickler.
Jensen said she would like to walk in the Pickler’s footsteps, and plans to train to become a heptathlete for the Cougars.
"They give me some goals," she said. "To try and pass what they have done in my fifth year there, or however long it takes me to get there.
"I really look forward to that challenge."
Added Meyer: "They’re just loaded in talent. And I think she’ll step in and have to work hard to prove herself. And I think that will only lead to good tings."
