Williams out indefinitely for Cascade Christian

Jordan Williams, Cascade Christian’s leading scorer at 22.2 points per game, is out indefinitely with a knee injury.

Jerry Williams, Cascade Christian head coach and Jordan’s father, said his son hurt his knee during the second quarter of the Crusaders game against Life Christian, getting sandwiched between two players while going up for a shot and collapsing to the floor on his way down.

A senior, Williams still has swelling in his knee, so he will have to wait for the swelling to go down to get an MRI, Jerry Williams said.

"We just keep hoping and

Sortun, Wells stepping down at Capital

Longtime Capital High football coach Wayne Sortun resigned as coach last week, after coaching for only a year since his return from teaching in China.

Sortun, 57, said he and his wife Kathy, who both enjoy traveling, signed a two-year contract to teach in Portugal.

"It was a tough decision," Sotrun said. "I have had many great years in the Olympia school district. But at the same time it’s an excellent opportunity for my wife and I."

Sortun has been the head coach at Capital High for 20 years, winning two state championships in 1996 and 1998

Kicker Elkin headed to Boise State

Bellarmine Prep senior Brad Elkin will get a chance to play on Saturday’s come fall.

Elkin, a News Tribune All-Area and all-state football selection as a kicker this season, verbally committed to attend Boise State University on Sunday.

Elkin took a recruiting visit to Boise over the weekend, and accepted an offer to play football there during his trip.

Elkin said the Broncos want him to punt next season, and he’ll also have an opportunity to compete for the placekicking job.

"For them it’s not about putting an All-Star team together," Elkin said. "It’s about who

Mount Tahoma boys overwhelm Gig Harbor

The Mount Tahoma boys basketball team hadn’t played a game in nine days because of the snow.

Didn’t matter

You wouldn’t have noticed as the Thunderbirds controlled Gig Harbor on the Tides’ home court Wednesday night, grabbing a 74-58 victory in a Narrows League crossover game.

Junior sharpshooter Patrick McCollum, somewhat forgotten early in the season, showed why he is considered one of the best guards in the state.

McCollum finished with 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Many of his points came from deep jumpers, as he shot 4-of-9 from the 3-point line.

Idaho State lands local standouts

First-year Idaho State University coach John Zamberlin

already has started mining his old recruiting stomping

grounds from his days as head man at Central

Washington University.

Zamberlin plucked two talented, but overlooked,

athletes from the South Sound this week. Lakes

defensive back Kelvin Miller and Graham-Kapowsin

receiver Ryan Ancheta verbally committed to attend

Idaho State after visiting the Division I-AA school in

Pocatello.

Miller is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound safety with 10.7 speed

in the 100 meters (4.45 40-yard dash).

Miller also played running back for the Lancers,

Games postponed again for Tuesday

Games in the South Sound were postponed again because of overnight snow that blanketed the Puget Sound region.

Dave Lutes, Kent School District athletic director, said SPSL league coaches will meet on Thursday to finalize a make-up schedule for the missed games.

The Tacoma School District and Peninsula School District closed schools on Tuesday, so Narrows League games scheduled for Wednesday will be at the hands of Mother Nature on whether or not they will be played. I’ll have an update later in the day once I find out more.
