EWU locks up Powers, Barnes

Eastern Washington University continued its tradition of plucking some of the best South Sound athletes to play in Cheney. Joining Gig Harbor’s Toney Henderson will be Tahoma High’s Chris Powers and Timberline’s Bobby Barnes.

Powers was a News Tribune all-area selection as a defensive lineman, and named the SPSL North defensive lineman of year. At 6-4, 265 pounds, Powers also was a first-team SPSL North selection as an offensive lineman.

Barnes was a News Tribune all-area selection as a wide receiver. At 5-9 and 165 pounds, Barnes totaled over 1,000 all-purpose yards for the Blazers, has good quickness

Friday games postponed

Strong winds that whipped through the Puget Sound region Thursday night and early Friday morning resulted in the postponement of several high school athletic events planned for Friday.

Basketball games and other athletic events scheduled for the Narrows, South Puget Sound, Western Cascade, Nisqually and Olympic leagues were cancelled and will be rescheduled for later in the year.

Games scheduled for Saturday in the Puget Sound region will go on as scheduled, depending on the individual facility’s ability to handle the event.

Jennifer Kubista, Tacoma school district athletic director, said four of Tacoma’s five comprehensive high schools

Prep hoops in full swing

Smith .jpg

We’re back. I apologize for neglecting the blog for the past week, but we’ve been busy putting together the prep basketball previews.

Which leads to this question: With the first couple games being played the last two weeks, who do you like to win the state championship this season?

Who do you think are the top boys and girls teams in the South Sound? Who are the top players?

I’ll start the discussion. I think by far the best player I’ve seen in Federal Way’s Terrell Smith.

A great shooter

Gig Harbor’s Henderson headed to EWU

Gig Harbor’s Toney Henderson made an oral commitment to play football at Eastern Washington University, Gig Harbor football coach Darren McKay announced on Thursday.

Henderson had offers from Montana and Eastern Washington, and Idaho also had shown interest, but the 5-9, 170-pound senior made his decision after talking with Eastern Washington head coach Paul Wulff on Thursday, Mckay said.

"He knew enough about them because of the guys we have playing over there," McKay said. "That was one of the main, determining factors. It’s scary enough to go away to a place for college where you don’t know

WIAA weighs in on coach stipends

Here’s the latest on what the WIAA is proposing to do to control how booster clubs spend money on coaches’ salaries. Let me know what you think.

Butch Goncharoff’s days as a well-paid high school football coach might be numbered.

On Monday, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s (WIAA) executive board approved a draft amendment that would require that any and all coaching stipends must be approved by a local school district board.

If the amendment becomes part of the WIAA’s rules, the $55,000 the Bellevue High football booster club pays Goncharoff to coach the Wolverines year-round would
