Elway poll shows huge opposition to gas tax

The Seattle Times is reporting that the latest Elway Poll carries terrible news for those pushing a 10-cent increase in the gas tax and other fees to improve maintenance of state highways, boost transit and complete several mega-projects.

All told, 72 percent of 412 polled voters opposed the phase-in of gas taxes at a rate of 2 cents a year for five years and 62 percent opposed an increase in vehicle tab fees. The polling was conducted Feb. 28 to March 2 and had an error margin of 5 percent, the Times said. House Speaker Chopp says 10-cent gas-tax proposal is a starting point for transpo funding talks

House Speaker Frank Chopp told reporters this afternoon that a possible $6 billion transportation package, including a phased-in 10-cent increase in the state gas tax over five years, is a conversation starter for the Legislature. He said it is too early to know if the 2-cents a year proposal should go to a vote of the public in November, or if the Legislature could get it done in Olympia.
