Former lawman will head up state Lottery

A former Washington State Patrol officer has been named director of the Washington State Lottery.

Gov. Chris Gregoire just announced that she’s appointed Bill Hanson to the post. In addition to serving as a patrolman and a trooper’s union and law enforcement association official, Hanson has served on the Lottery Commission for the last five years.

 “The state Lottery is undergoing a period of change with a new mission,” the governor said in a press release. “Bill is the right director at the right to time to usher in this new phase of the state’s lottery, especially as it helps fund critical programs like education.”

Attention gamblers: Powerball available starting Sunday

Starting Sunday, Washington residents can get in on the big-jackpot Powerball multi-state drawing. Washington’s participation in the nation’s largest draw game follows the resolution of a dust-up last year in which the Powerball states refused to allow states that offered the rival Mega Millions game to join their consortium.

According to a Seattle Times story, ten more states are joining Powerball this week, bringing the total to 41. The state gets half the proceeds from each $1 ticket and hopes to generate as much as $30 million a year from the new game, according to the Times.
