Sheryl Gordon McCloud is third candidate for vacant Supreme Court seat

Appellate lawyer Sheryl Gordon McCloud will run for the state’s highest court, seeking to replace retiring Justice Tom Chambers.

She is the third candidate in the race, making it likely the election won’t be decided until November. A Supreme Court candidate has to receive a majority of the votes in the August primary to eliminate the other candidates; otherwise, the top two proceed to the general election.

The growing field includes former Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg and King County Superior Court Judge Bruce Hilyer. Former Justice Richard Sanders is also considering a run.

Supreme Court’s Chambers to retire; Bruce Hilyer joins Ladenburg in race

Supreme Court Justice Tom Chambers will step down at the end of his term this year, opening the door for John Ladenburg and at least one rival.

King County Superior Court Judge Bruce Hilyer announced today he would seek Chambers’s seat. He and Ladenburg have formed committees to raise campaign money, which they can legally begin Sunday.

A third potential candidate is considering running: former Justice Richard Sanders, who lost his seat in a squeaker in 2010.

Chambers, 68, said Thursday he would not run for a third term.
