Supreme Court Justice Alexander condemns latest round of special interest hit pieces

Jim Johnson’s re-election campaign sent out this release from Justice Gerry Alexander which takes on those who are attacking Johnson.

Alexander has endorsed Johnson but the release raises the broader issue of turning Supreme Court campaigns into the same gutter fight that has made elections for legislative and executive offices such a delight.

“You don’t need to be a judge to see danger in an attack ad funded by powerful interests that have business before the court,” Alexander said. “These ads are unfair and an attack against judicial independence. Hands off our state Supreme Court.”

Tacoma trial lawyer Stan Rumbaugh wants to take on Justice Johnson

A Pierce County trial lawyer, Stan Rumbaugh, says he is filing to run for the state Supreme Court against conservative, one-term Justice James Johnson.

Rumbaugh, who filed late Tuesday, put out a news release that flatly accused Johnson of siding with corporations, insurers and the state builders’ lobby. Johnson’s campaign responded almost as caustically, saying Rumbaugh has never done appellate work and is “unqualified” for the Supreme Court.

This developing challenge to Johnson was one of the few surprises on Tuesday, the second day of candidate filing week in Washington’s 2010 election cycle.
