Heck reports raising $310,000 more in 10th CD race

Democrat Denny Heck of Olympia has added to his money pile, reporting today that his 10th Congressional District campaign raised another $310,000 in the second quarter that ended June 30. That is on top of the more than $1 million he already had raised through March – which was eight times what Republican rivals Dick Muri of Steilacoom or Stan Flemming of University Place at that point.

Detailed reports are due at the Federal Elections Commission by July 15 for the three-month period ending June 30. I haven’t seen any announcements from Heck’s five rivals in the race yet.

Muri raised $133,577 through March and said recently he expected to be a bit higher than that for June. Flemming had $125,051 through June but his cash includes a loan of $100,700 from Beverly Hills-based Spanky, LLC, which his campaign describes as a business that makes loans. The lender’s registered representative in California is listed as Sherry Hackett, widow of late comedian Buddy Hackett.

10th district candidates split on future of health law

The federal health-reform law upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday is shaping up as a point of sharp differentiation between candidates in the 10th Congressional District campaign. Three major-party candidates in the six-person field put out statements after the ruling – with Democrat Denny Heck of Olympia celebrating the law’s constitutionality, Republican Dick Muri of Steilacoom repeating his call to repeal the law, and Republican Stan Flemming of University of Place appearing to back away from his commitment to repeal the law if elected.

The three other candidates didn’t put out statements. But two of them – Sue Gunn, a Progressive Independent from Olympia, and Steve Hannon, an independent from Yelm – favor a single payer system (in other words a system like Medicare). Democrat Jennifer Ferguson of University Place has said she likes the direction the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was headed with an expansion of Medicaid for the poor.

Gov. Chris Gregoire made clear Thursday that Washington state is moving ahead to put the law fully into effect by January 2014.

Here are excerpts from the candidates’ news releases, starting with Heck, who called attention to what the law does for consumers:

New endorsements for Muri, Flemming in 10th

Update: Republicans Dick Muri and Stan Flemming reported endorsements in their rival 10th Congressional District campaigns – including Flemming’s endorsement by Republican Secretary of State Sam Reed. And Andrew Barkis, a Republican running against Thurston County Commissioner Sandra Romero, announced he has the backing of former commissioner and Democrat Diane Oberquell.

Muri announced the backing of police-group WACOPS in a news release that says:

Stan Flemming borrows $100,700 from Beverly Hills firm

UPDATE: Democrat Denny Heck has personally loaned some $350,000 to his congressional campaigns – including a fresh $100,000 infusion for this year’s bid in Washington’s new 10th Congressional District. Republican Stan Flemming’s campaign is trying to keep pace with Heck and rival Republican Dick Muri’s fundraising by using creative financing: Flemming borrowed $100,700 from a firm in Beverly Hills earlier this year.

Flemming, the University Place physician and retired Army general running for Congress in the 10th Congressional District, apparently has connections with the widow of late Hollywood comedian Buddy Hackett. Sherry Hackett donated $1,000 to Flemming’s campaign –

10th CD: Flemming has plans for jobs, retraining

With titles like doctor and brigadier general already on his resume, Pierce County Councilman Stan Flemming wants to add another: congressman. He lists five issues he wants to address if he is elected as the first U.S. House member from Washington’s new 10th district, but he puts one first.

“It begins No. 1 with jobs – jobs for our youth, the younger generation, and jobs for the older generation,’’ Flemming said earlier this week at his campaign headquarters, located in a Lakewood office complex. “For me to address the debt of our nation it begins with getting people back to

Pierce County Councilman Stan Flemming declares for newly created 10th Congressional District

The University Place Republican had been planning to run in the new 10th where ever it ended up. Federal law does not require candidates to be residents of the district and Stan Flemming was steering clear of the 9th District as fellow councilman Dick Muri had already announced for that race.

So Flemming was surprised and pleased this morning that the new 10th contains both his home and some of his current council district (at least the district that elected him) and the military bases.

“It was not just nice news, it was wonderful news,” Flemming said. Muri, however, is
