Former Tacoma city manager Ray Corpuz gets Salinas post

Tacoma’s former long-time city manager Ray Corpuz has been named city manager of Salinas, Calif. And his appointment was the subject of some controversy centering around his record in Tacoma.

The Californian reports that in a closed-door session Saturday, the Salinas City Council voted 4-3 to hire Corpuz to run the municipal government of the city of 150,000. Corpuz has been manager in the smaller nearby city of Seaside, where he landed after being ousted from Tacoma in 2003.

That was the year when former Police Chief David Brame fatally wounded his estranged wife Crystal, then killed himself, touching off a municipal building meltdown. Corpuz took the blame for Brame’s mismanagement of the Police Department and for not doing enough to investigate and intervene following reports of Brame’s domestic violence.

Ray Corpuz’s ‘questionable history’ comes up in California town

Former Tacoma city manager Ray Corpuz continues to be the center of controversy in his job managing the town of Seaside, Calif. According to a story on the Montery Herald’s Web site today, his city council is standing behind him despite calls for his firing. Residents object to Corpuz’s suspension of the city’s police chief, and are also dredging up his troubles in Tacoma.

“How could you hire a city manager with such questionable history?” said (resident) Andrea Meck. “What were you thinking then and what are you thinking now?”

Ray Corpuz watch: Police take no-confidence vote

Former Tacoma City Manager Ray Corpuz is weathering political upheaval in his new town of Seaside, Calif. Here’s the latest from the Monterey Herald.

SEASIDE, Calif- The results are in and the Seaside Police Officers Association (POA) has no confidence in City Manager Ray Corpuz.

The Seaside POA held the vote of no confidence ten days ago and just got the results Tuesday. The association says that the POA needed a majority of its member to vote for the no confidence to pass.
