Kim Wyman defeats Kathleen Drew as lone Republican to win statewide this year

Democrat Kathleen Drew has conceded the race, making Republican Kim Wyman the undisputed winner of the Washington secretary of state race and the lone Republican running statewide to win in the Evergreen State this fall.

“I always thought this race was about experience. I think that played a big role in it,” Wyman told me in a telephone interview. “You look at the rest of the ticket and I’m the only statewide Republican on the West Coast I found out today. There was clearly a blue wave that rolled over Washington.’’

Drew conceded the race in the last hour, and Wyman said Drew just called her to congratulate her on the 41,340-vote victory (as of this afternoon).

Murray, Cantwell and Dicks join Inslee, Kilmer, Heck for final rallies today in Tacoma and Olympia

Three days before the election Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Inslee and congressional candidate Denny Heck are making another swing through South Sound this afternoon, joined by the state’s two U.S. senators in Tacoma near the end of a 26-stop state “Tour for Jobs.”

The Tacoma stop is at 12:15 p.m. at IBEW Local 76’s hall, 3049 South 36th Ave. State Democrats say the focus is on tax credits and training programs that have put veterans to work. Among speakers are Inslee, U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, retiring 6th district Congressman Norm Dicks and 6th district candidate Derek Kilmer. Kilmer is fending off a well-funded challenge from Republican Bill Driscoll.

The next stop is in Olympia at 2:30 at the Thurston County Democrats’ campaign headquarters, 423 W. Fourth Ave.

Endorsements are pouring in, and many candidates are sharing the word. A few of the recent ones:

  • Kathleen Drew announced Gov. Chris Gregoire endorsed her Democratic candidacy for secretary of state. Drew worked as a policy adviser to Gregoire for six years, including on the major agency-merger bill of 2011. In a news release, Gregoire said: “Kathleen’s experience in the Legislature and in the Governor’s office make her well suited to be Secretary of State. She has my support and my vote. … During that time she showed great leadership on a range of policy issues, including efforts to
