Tacoma: City Council expected to name new member today

Tacoma’s City Council likely will name its next council member later today, after a round of public interviews and private discussions.

As we reported here, the council intends to interview each applicant for the job during a live broadcast on Tacoma TV 12 beginning at noon today. The council is expected to convene to an executive session to discuss the candidates’ qualifications, then select the new member during the Council’s regular meeting at 5 p.m.

Tacoma: City Council expected to appoint new council member next week

In one week, Tacoma likely will know who its next City Council member will be.

City officials said today Tacoma’s eight sitting council members are likely to appoint  a new member on Jan. 15  from a pool of seven candidates who applied to fill the seat recently vacated by state Rep. Jake Fey, D-27.

The decision  likely will come during the council’s regular meeting on Jan. 15 — several hours after each candidate is interviewed during a noon study session,  according to a press release issued today.  All of the candidate interviews will be televised live on Tacoma TV 12.

Tacoma: Seven candidates apply to fill Fey’s City Council seat

A political consultant. A boutique cake shop owner. A downtown salon proprietor. A real estate broker. A retired teacher . A state patrol sergeant. An art house theater director.

They are among the seven candidates who filed applications vying for appointment to fill the unexpired term of outgoing Tacoma City Councilman Jake Fey.  Fey, who officially vacates his District 2 council seat on Dec. 31, won election to the Washington House of Representatives in November.

GOP challenger runs in 27th District

A retired teacher from Northeast Tacoma is challenging state Rep. Jeannie Darneille.

Republican Jon Higley became involved in political activism when he founded the Tacoma 9/12 Project, based on an initiative of Fox News personality Glenn Beck and focused on principles of limited government in the Constitution. He’s stepped down from the group to run for the Legislature.

“Our state government is openly ignoring the will of the people, over-turning an initiative and raising taxes during this difficult economy is just the latest example,” he said in a news release.

The 27th is a solid Democratic district, but Higley said he thinks voters are looking for a change this year and want fiscal responsibility. “The ‘Progressives’ have carried Washington State and Washington D.C. way too far to the left,” he said.
